Wild Bill's Lake

If you want to go on a furrific walk with your pup around a lovely lake, Wild Bill Lake Trail is perfect for you! This loop trail is located within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. The trail is 0.4 miles long and paved, making it easy for pups to walk on. Dogs are welcome to join you on this pawsitively amazing trail on-leash.

The trail begins at Wild Bill Lake Picnic Ground, where parking and restrooms are available. When you’re ready, you can hop onto the trail. The trail follows Wild Bill Lake the whole way through, providing great views of the lake and the picturesque Beartooth Mountains in the distance. The trail has very little elevation gain, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

As you’re walking, you may spot some of Custer Gallatin National Forest’s native wildlife. This includes elks, mule deer, bobcats, beavers, raccoons, ferrets, and badgers. There are also over 300 species of birds in the forest, including bald and golden eagles, peregrine falcons, hawks, and great horned owls.

If you’d like to go fishing with your pup, Wild Bill Lake Trail takes you past two wheelchair-accessible fishing docks. Wild Bill Lake is stocked multiple times during the year with rainbow trout. You and your pup will both have a good time relaxing by the lake as you try your luck catching these fish!

The trail ends where it began at the Wild Bill Lake Picnic Ground. If all that walking makes you and your pup hungry, grab a seat at one of these picnic tables and enjoy lunch with a furtastic view.
