Wag! Walkers know Downtown Birmingham (Downtown)
Downtown Birmingham is the shopping and commercial district of the city of Birmingham, just north of Detroit. Despite the commercial feel of the area, there are still plenty of apartments as well as a number of homes along the outskirts. The city center has lots of dining available from cafes with outdoor seating to small stores where getting a quick drink on your way through is possible. Downtown Birmingham has some trendy boutique-style pet stores for your dog’s latest fashions and treats or, if you are looking for a wider variety, just outside of town, you can find pet stores that have a bit of everything. Grooming and vets are also just as easily accessible.
Winter tends to be very cold here so expect snow and freezing temperatures for at least a third of the winter months. Moderate rainfall is spread throughout the year and summer temperatures stay fairly moderate for the most part.
What is the terrain like in Downtown Birmingham (Downtown)?
The terrain throughout the whole of Birmingham is fairly flat and it is not until you get out of the downtown area that you will see a few small elevation changes. Walking is easy, provided the weather is cooperating, and a walk around the downtown area can be an enjoyable experience. You will find all well-maintained sidewalks, some trees, hanging flowers decorating many of the streets during the spring and summer, and some shoulders that offer a few small patches of grass.
In the outer reaches of downtown where there are more single-family homes, expect to see a lot more grass and trees. Grass lines the shoulders between the street and sidewalk and trees provide a fair amount of shade in many areas. There are also trail heads heading out of town and running along the rivers in the area. These riverside trails can be a real treat on hot days.
How many greenways are there in Downtown Birmingham (Downtown)?
The dog lovers of downtown Birmingham are blessed to have some nice greenways in the form of rivers with trails running along side them. Booth Trail runs along the Rouge River which has an abundance of trees as a canopy. The trail opens up into a large field of grass and a playground. You can access the trail off of W. Maple St. by walking up Willits Trail until you get to Willits St. There, you can access the Booth Trail and river.
Another trail and greenway also has a trailhead just off of W. Maple Rd. where it intersects with Hawthorne St. This trail runs south through Linden Park. To the north, another trail picks up and heads up Lower Baldwin Park and to Quarton Lake. The trails are pavement, but there is ample grass along them so your dog does not have to pound the pavement on hot summer days.
