When heat waves occur in this urban neighborhood, avoid going out in the middle of the day, take shorter walks, and pack water for you and your pooch to beat hot, humid conditions.

Lafayette Park is a designated historic district with structures exhibiting original architecture. There are commercial areas with heavier traffic, less landscaping, and more development as well as residential sections. Homes consist of unique high rise apartment towers, low rise apartment complexes, and condominium type housing developments that were designed by prominent, original architects and have unique style and features.

The riverfront is only a few blocks to the south and provides an interesting destination with parks and commercial amenities. The terrain is the area is flat and you and your pet won't have to hike up steep grades in icy or sweltering Detroit weather. Sidewalks are prevalent in the community and create safe, separate walkways for pedestrians and pets. A large greenway runs through the center of the area, giving the community its name. An additional narrower greenway runs along the east side of the community, so even though this is a central, developed district, it has a peaceful, park-like setting.

Lafayette Park residents and their furry friends can travel on foot to reach the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor. This beautiful riverfront park has 31 acres of natural wetlands, open areas, and trees with paved trails and a conical lighthouse tower that marks the entrance to a slip harbor. This is a great place to stroll with your leashed dog and enjoy the local wildlife.

The Lafayette Plaisance Park extends through the neighborhood and is easily reachable from all areas of the district. This green space has open areas and shade trees with paved paths and is ideal for walking with your dog. The Dequindre Cut Greenway runs along the east side of the neighborhood for 1.8 miles and is an asphalt trail referred to as a “cut” because it is located in a trench where an old rail trail was located, 25 feet below street level.
