Wag! Walkers know Boston (Thurmond)

[The map for this submission is a map of Boston. The article title and content are about the neighborhood of Boston (Thurmond) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.]

Winston-Salem has a unique and rich history. Much of this can be seen while exploring Old Salem, originally called Bethabara by the area's first settlers - Moravian Protestants.  These German-speaking immigrants secured the land of Bethabara in the 1750's and the history, evolution, and growth of Winston-Salem have changed and grown since. Old Salem (formerly Bethabara) takes up only a small portion of this medium-sized city but has been acknowledged as a National Historic Landmark.

If you aren't a history buff, Winston-Salem has a number of art galleries and museums to offer both its residents and visitors. There's also the BB&T Ballpark where you can enjoy a hot dog or two, all while rooting for the home team. Ten minutes north of Winston-Salem's early history and cultural downtown is the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood. In recent years, this area has been surrounded by controversy due to its nomination for revitalization. As an older, urban neighborhood, the community worries about gentrification and a rise in property costs.

What is the terrain like in Boston (Thurmond)?

When walking your doggo around the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood, you'll find sidewalks lining most of the main streets, such as Thurmond Street and University Parkway. You may have to share them with bus stops and/or trashcans, however, so if you're in the process of socializing a puppy, bring along plenty of treats, as even a sedentary trash bin can seem like a scary monster to a young or non-socialized dog.

Side streets or those less traveled tucked away within little subdivisions and culdesacs are not likely to have sidewalks, so exercise caution when walking your dog here. There is also a lack of pedestrian-friendly cross-walks where traffic lights aren't present, so always use caution and be sure vehicles see both you and your pet before walking across the street. For evening walks, you can attach light reflectors to your dog's leash or harness, helping others see them more easily.

The architecture isn't much to look at, as most of the homes and apartment buildings are stained and weathered with age. However, there are a number of public parks nearby.

How many greenways are there in Boston (Thurmond)?

In the Tar Heel State, churches are like Starbucks; there's one on every corner. Kimberley Park is the perfect example, as six churches are all within less than a one-mile radius. Elsewhere crowding around Kimberley Park are suburban homes, community centers, apartment buildings, and grocery stores. All in all, this is a very neighborhood-centric and community-driven public space for the residents of Boston-Thurmond. Complete with swimming pool, open space for games, a playground, and paths for walking or jogging, Kimberley Park is a great space for you and Fido to enjoy.

Blum Park has recreational fields and courts as well as a playground. There are trails for you to enjoy with your dog, including some that line a petite pond. There is a pavilion that can host up to 100 people for community events or family reunions. But when it isn't time for a special occasion, Blum Park will do fine for a simple walk or potty break for your loyal pet.
