Ridgewood is a neighborhood in Bergen, New Jersey, 20 miles away from the hustle and bustle of Midtown Manhattan. Ridgewood’s Downtown is its central business and commercial area, centered around East Ridgewood Avenue. The Downtown is the perfect mix of small-town comfort and urban excitement. It boasts a wide range of shops, restaurants, and services all within walking distance and with a family-friendly feel.

Although Downtown Ridgewood is primarily a commercial and residential zone, there are places for your pooch to enjoy too. A small river called Hohokus Brook runs through the Downtown and into Dunham Trail Woods, offering a natural path you and your little friend can follow to find some greenery. There are also multiple pet stores in the area including the famous Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming that provides haircuts and baked goods to pampered pooches! Drop your little BFF in for a treat while you hit the shops and treat yourself!

As the main Downtown area of Ridgewood is commercial and residential, it is built up with shops, homes, and superstores. The terrain around these parts is flat and even which is perfect for less intense strolls with your pooch when you want to do some window shopping or grab a coffee at one of the dog-friendly cafés. Sneakers or sandals are fine for wandering this area.

If you visit one of Downtown Ridgewood’s parks, however, hiking boots and towels for muddy paws may be required. Dunham Trail Woods, as its name suggests, has woodland terrain which is uneven and sometimes has an incline. Saddle River County Park is not a forest but has large open green spaces that can get muddy on rainy days, so pack those boots just in case!

The real range of environments within Downtown Ridgewood is a great reason to visit. You won’t get bored, and neither will your pooch.

As already mentioned, walkers can follow the Hohokus Brook southwards till they reach the Dunham Trail Woods, a greenway named after the Dunham walking trail that runs through it. The trail is around a quarter of a mile long and takes the walker through forest and wooded wetlands while walking alongside the river. Perfect for pups that love an adventure!

The other main greenway in Downtown Ridgewood is Saddle River County Park, named after the river that runs along its east side. At a huge 596 acres, this park offers plenty of space for you to tire out your pup while offering beautiful views of a duck pond and the Saddle River. The park also has its own dog park, the only one in the town, providing secured spaces for your pooch to run free with other dogs of their size.
