Best dog walkers in Arden Heights

The Arden Heights area is mostly flat, with some gentle inclines and sloping terrain, but negotiating hills is not usually an issue for pedestrians and their pups. This residential neighborhood is relatively quiet, although major arteries around the borders of the community experience increased traffic and there can be some thru traffic even in residential areas. Be careful when crossing roads with your dog and keep your canine friend leashed at all times. Most areas have sidewalks, with the exception of some major arteries. Sidewalks provide safe separate walkways in urban neighborhoods for people walking their dogs. 

Arden Heights is comprised mostly of single-family homes, many with well-landscaped yards and pools. This well-established neighborhood has mature trees, and there is plenty of shade to enjoy when walking your dog in hot summer months along tree-lined avenues. There is a large undeveloped treed area, Arden Heights Woods, on the northwest side of Arden Heights, which provides habitat for local flora and fauna. This area is natural and features rough, unkempt terrain, and heavy underbrush. If you decide to explore this area, watch out for local wildlife that may not appreciate your canine companion, and avoid heavy underbrush, where ticks could be present. Check your dog for ticks after walking in heavily treed areas.

There are plenty of parks and greenways to enjoy with your dog in Arden Heights and the surrounding area.  Arden Heights Woods is a large forested area, of almost 200 acres, which contains New York City’s largest wetlands. The untouched wilderness and natural area make it easy to forget you are even in an urban area. There are many birds and other wildlife present in this area. Keep your dog leashed so as not to disturb local wildlife and local birdwatchers who come here to enjoy the variety of feathered friends.

Wegener Park is also located in the Arden Heights community and is a 3.5-acre park with more maintained trails running thru natural areas. Sweet Brook is located on the eastern edge of the community and is known as a blue belt rather than a green belt, because of the creek running through it, which has been the recipient of stabilization and conservation measures to ensure that this area is preserved and that the waterway stays viable for wildlife.  

There are several other parcels of natural areas, with natural trees and clearings, and trails to enjoy walking your dog in Arden Heights. When you run out of greenways right in Arden Heights, you can always explore Freshkills Park to the north of Arden Heights, which at 2,200 acres is the largest developed park in New York City, with miles of wilderness and green space and trails to explore with your dog.
