Baychester is located in the northeast section of the Bronx, New York. There is a mix of residential housing and commercial, retail, and industrial activity in the area. Several main roads run through Baychester and business activities tend to be clustered along main thoroughfares. A local mall contains movie theatres, large retail outlets, and multiple services, however, access to this area on foot is hampered by freeways, roads, and traffic in the area. There are also some industrial areas along the river that are not hospitable to pedestrians and pets.

Residents enjoy walking their dogs in residential areas and accessing some services on main roads that run through the community. When walking on foot, be prepared for wet weather in coastal New York, as rain is possible year round while winter can be cold and very wet with the possibility of snow. Summer is usually warm and sunny with plenty of days to enjoy walking in Baychester with your pet.

The Baychester neighborhood is primarily flat area and residential streets are straight and easy to walk. There is a major freeway running through Baychester that can impede foot traffic. The New England Thruway intersects the community and requires a pedestrian crossing in the north or via underpass further south. There are also several busy main roads with lots of traffic to be aware of in the area. Keep your dog leashed and close, especially on heavily trafficked roads.

There is a large multi-story housing complex on the northeast side of Baychester and the northeast Bronx Education Park and sports fields associated with it provide green space to residents. Large industrial areas along the river are not pedestrian friendly, with massive paved parking lots and fenced lots. Unfortunately, access to the waterfront to the east is somewhat limited, except in the south where a housing complex with pedestrian ways borders the river.
