There is even a large two-story mall located at Hunts Point Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard. You can enjoy walking in residential areas or to access shops in commercial areas, weather permitting. The weather in New York is variable with rainy and overcast days more likely in the spring and fall. Summer tends to be hot and humid, with sunny days conducive to walking, however, winter can be cool, and you may need to wear warm gear when walking in New York winters. If you are on foot in the summer in commercial areas with lots of pavement and concrete, be sure to protect your dog's feet from hot cement. Boots are available and are also great to protect your dog's feet from debris and litter on roadways and sidewalks in busy urban areas.

The terrain in Longwood is somewhat hilly, and some slopes requiring negotiation a change in elevation are present in the neighborhood. The is a Longwood Historic District, along Longwood Avenue, Beck, Kelly and Dawson Streets, and Hewitt Place, with semi=detached row houses. Several housing projects also exist in the neighborhood. The Bronx River is located to the east and there are some vacant lots in the area; many have grass and trees and may be kept or unkept, depending on current ownership. Dogs need to stay on the borders of playgrounds, or on walkways on a leash. Other parks and squares in the neighborhood have walkways where dogs are welcome on leash, but remember to be prepared to clean up after your pooch to be respectful to other park users. There are trees in many of these green spaces, providing shade, and benches for a rest on hot, humid days.

The Concrete Plant Park along the Bronx River has trails for walking along the river and enjoying a cool breeze off the water, and there are some unique structures in this park from the former concrete plant.

Just south of Longwood, in St. Marys’ Park,  is an off-leash dog park that Longwood residents can go to for some off-leash activity with their dog.
