Top dog walkers in Utopia
Wag! Walkers know Utopia
A hundred years ago, this little neighborhood in Queens was still farmland. Named Utopia for its goal of providing an escape from Manhattan, this little community is a welcome change for residents, with its single-family dwellings complete with grassy yards for kids and pets.
Located in central Queens, Utopia is surrounded by a number of other neighborhoods. Mostly residential, there are several businesses scattered primarily along the interstates that border the neighborhood including restaurants, a veterinarian, and close access to all the supplies your pup could possibly want or need. The streets along this neighborhood are pleasant places to walk your dog, with plenty of greenery and wide sidewalks, and like most of NYC, there are plenty of parks close by if city walking is not your thing.
Not every day in New York City is a good day for walking. The weather can have some pretty big extremes, including cold, snow, heat, and humidity, but you will find that there are even more days when you can fit in a walk, either early in the morning or during the beautiful springs and falls this area has.
What is the terrain like in Utopia?
The terrain in Utopia, like all of New York City, is flat, which is ideal for those out of shape or elderly pooches but may not be much of a challenge for those who want to get their heart rate up or are trying to help their furry buddies lose a bit of weight. That being said, you can pick up the intensity in this fairly quiet neighborhood and increase your distance to still get a fairly nice workout. Within the neighborhood, you will find mostly sidewalks to walk on, but there is also grass and trees that your dog will enjoy sniffing. You won’t find any walking trails in this neighborhood, but nearby parks in adjacent neighborhoods do offer a few choices for walking trails. The two small parks in Utopia are really more playgrounds than parks, so if you are looking for a place for the two of you to romp in the grass, you may have to venture out of the neighborhood.
How many greenways are there in Utopia?
Your best choices for greenways lie outside of the small neighborhood of Utopia, but you won’t have to go very far to find them. Like the rest of the city, Queens has set aside greenways all over the community for residents and their pets to enjoy. Kissena Park and Lake, as well as the Kissena Corridor Park, have large open grassy areas just to the north of Utopia on the other side of the Long Island Expressway. There is also Cunningham Park, which is 358 acres of open spaces and includes hiking trails and dog-friendly areas including a dog run where your furry companion can enjoy a romp off the leash. Cunningham Park sits a couple of blocks off the border of the Utopia neighborhood to the south and east of it. A bit farther away to the west, but well worth the visit, is the Flushing Meadow Corona Park. With an abundance of greenways, lakes, and dog-friendly areas, it is the perfect place to visit on a beautiful spring day.
