Wag! Walkers know Park Hill
Nestled along the Grymes foothills, Park Hill is an often-forgotten neighborhood and one of the few places in New York that can claim 'mountain' views. The area is old, settled and lived in by the Vanderbilt family. Today, there are still some very old homes in the area. Many of the businesses in this neighborhood run along Vanderbilt Ave. There is a mix of old and new structures, bringing a lot of diversity into the neighborhood. The only amenities run along the west side of the neighborhood where you will find a few restaurants and corner stores. The nearest amenities for Fido are northeast in Rosebank, so be sure to stay stocked up on their favorite treats.
Weather in New York has a lot of ups and downs. You could not ask for a more beautiful place when walking in the fall and spring, but summer can be very hot and muggy and winters can be icy cold.
What is the terrain like in Park Hill?
Park Hill is surrounded by large foothills but is itself relatively flat. For casual walkers and those just starting out with walking, there is plenty of space to walk where there are no elevation changes. You can take the terrain at your own pace and enjoy the sights. At the same time, the foothills are a short walking distance away so when you are ready for a more challenging walk, you have that option.
It is an urban-style neighborhood so expect to walk mainly on concrete sidewalks unless you choose to head to one of the local parks. All of the streets do have at least one sidewalk, but not all have grass shoulders or trees that provide shade. Given how hot it can be in the summer, it is important to remember that you should never walk midday when the pavement is very hot. Opt instead for an early morning walk to keep paws from burning.
How many greenways are there in Park Hill?
Eibs Pond Park is a nature reserve that is open to the public. You can enjoy walking the paths, give your dog some time in the grass, and take advantage of the shade offered by so many trees. Sobel Park has a playground with some trees and places to walk back behind the play area. It is nicely shaded, so it is a great place to escape the heat.
If neither of these parks satisfies Fido’s need for a bit of nature, you can head over to Silver Lake Park where you will find more walking paths, lots of grass, and a dog run, giving Fido lots of options for getting exercise!
Just to the west of Silver Lake Park, Clove Lake Park has lots of trails as well as some off-leash areas which give you the option of spending a bit of one-on-one time with your pup. Play fetch or just romp around the green fields!
