If you own a dog and enjoy daily walks with your canine companion in the region, you will need to be prepared for New York weather which can be cool and wet or even snowy in winter. On the other hand, breathable clothing is needed for the summer months. Plan walks with your dog in the cooler times of the day in this case. Storms and inclement weather from the Atlantic Ocean can occur at any time of year and you should check weather forecasts before heading out on a long greenway stroll.
Prince’s Bay is located along the coast of Raritan Bay and the coastline and beach are a dominant feature in the area. The neighborhood is bordered by Huguenot on the north and Pleasant Plains on the west. The parks, along with wetlands and rural creeks in the district, provide large natural areas.
Prince’s Bay has several historic homes in the community including the Abraham Manee House, one of the oldest houses in New York City. The Seguine Mansion also dates back to the 1600s and has an equestrian center attached to the property. The area along Seguine Avenue, south of the SIR station, is one of the oldest in the neighborhood with many two-story vintage homes with large lawns and generous landscaping.
The area has some gentle inclines but is mostly level and not difficult to walk around. The Staten Island Railway is also located in the area and tracks can pose a barrier to pedestrians navigating the district.
Also located in Prince’s Bay is the Lemon Creek Park. This park is a dog-friendly off-leash park located at the bottom of Seguine Avenue. The creek for which the park is named runs through the area and empties into the bay. There are eateries, a marina, and kayak and canoe launch sites located here which bring a variety of users to the area.
