Wag! Walkers know South Central Hilltop
South Central Hilltop is a residential community to the west of downtown Columbus. While the primary type of housing is single-family, you will also find multifamily housing and a number of apartment buildings. There are a few restaurants nearby, but a much larger selection within a fifteen to twenty-minute drive that is worth the time it takes to get to them. Pet supply stores are also a bit of a drive. While there are several parks in the area, the nearest dog park is far to the north in the Wheeler Memorial Park.
For those of you who like your year to have all four seasons, Columbus has what you need. Warm springs follow winters that are below freezing while gentle spring rains replace winter snows. Hot summers follow on with temperatures in the mid-80s. Chilly fall follows a hot summer offering you a break from the heat before the chill of winter sets in.
What is the terrain like in South Central Hilltop?
The terrain in this area is flat and quite typical of what you might expect to find in a suburban neighborhood such as South Central Hilltop. The blocks of houses form a grid pattern that is very easy to navigate your way around. While most of the residential streets have sidewalks on both sides of them, the main interconnecting streets do not. When taking Fido across these streets or along them to the next block, you'll need to pay very close attention to the traffic to ensure you make it safely.
With the exception of a few main thoroughfares like Whitehorne Avenue and Sullivant Avenue which run along the northern and eastern borders respectively, most of these streets are quiet without the need to stress about vehicles veering past. These spaces will provide nice patches of grass for pit stops or you can follow them towards the parks in the area.
How many greenways are there in South Central Hilltop?
South Central Hilltop is a little short on green space. However, there is a small park and playground on S Richardson Avenue by the Boroughs Elementary School. The park has playgrounds for the kids and lots of grass and a walking trail for you and Fido to enjoy as long as you keep them on a leash.
The other green space is in the southeast corner by St. Agnes Church and behind the Hilltonia Middle School. Hilltonia Park measures approximately 11.5 acres and offers plenty of room for family fun. There is also plenty of room for you and your pooch to run around and play. Like most parks in the city, your dog must be on a leash, which can take some of the fun out of play, but it is the law. Luckily, the park has plenty of space for your pup to roam, whether or not they're hampered by the leash.
