Wag! Walkers know Centennial
Centennial is a southeast Portland, Oregon neighborhood. Residents have a 22-minute commute to the downtown area to the west, but there are lots of local businesses and services in the area that are within walking distance. Restaurants, shops, and other commercial establishments are concentrated along Division Street which runs through the middle of the neighborhood, Stark Street on the north, and Powell Boulevard on the south. No matter where you live in the region, you can reach a commercial corridor on foot.
Pet owners will find A to Z Pets, a unique pet supply shop in the region, and two pet-friendly restaurants, Burgerville and McMenamins Highland Pub, where their dogs can join them in outdoor seating areas.
Portland weather can be pretty wet, so have rain gear handy to keep you dry while strolling with your pup. Winter temperatures are usually above freezing, but can drop. When coupled with precipitation, icy conditions manifest, so use caution on slippery walkways.
What is the terrain like in Centennial?
Centennial is bordered by Stark Street on the north, 174th Avenue on the east, Powell Boulevard on the south, and 142 Avenue on the west. The topography in the area is relatively flat and there are no hills to contend with. People and pets of all ability levels can walk the region easily without having to trek up steep grades. Some area streets have separate sidewalks for pedestrians and pets, but some residential streets do not.
There are some commercial corridors in the Centennial neighborhood with traffic, but most of the area is comprised of quiet residential space. Homes tend to be moderate, single-family dwellings, although there is also a mobile home park and some low-rise apartment complexes in the district. Properties are neat, well landscaped, and maintained. Large trees present in the community provide plenty of shade and there are natural areas around the neighborhood and on the south border.
How many greenways are there in Centennial?
Centennial canines have a choice of developed or natural greenways. On the south border, the Powell Butte Nature Park occupies 611 acres and has nine miles of trails to explore with your pup. There is a great view from the top of the surrounding urban area and distant mountains. Some paths are developed and maintained, but others are natural dirt trails that may have steep, rough terrain, so use caution. A restroom is also available in the park for dog walkers to use if needed.
Parklane Park is located on the north side of Centennial and is 125-acre greenway with mostly open areas and some trees on the border. The park has a restroom, basketball court, playground, and sports fields. There are unpaved trails in the park where you can enjoy a walk with your leashed pup!
Lynchview City Park is centrally located and has sports fields and an open greenway with trees. Your dog must remain leashed in this area.
