Wag! Walkers know North Central
North Central is more of a general geographic area than a formal neighborhood in North Philadelphia, but it still has its own distinct borders and community. It is located in between the Yorktown and Fairmount communities and its southern border is defined by Girard Avenue which is a major city thoroughfare that runs west through the Temple University area all the way down to the city’s hip and artistic section of Fishtown. North Central is ethnically diverse and a historically working-class section of Philadelphia.
Warm weather lovers may be pleased to know that Philly doesn't typically get as cold as some cities further north and, instead, provides some nice, moderate temperatures, especially in early summer. It may get up to the nineties on some summer days, but it can be moderated by temperatures in spring and fall which are much more middle-of-the-road. No matter what type of climate you prefer, Philly should provide ideal weather at some point.
What is the terrain like in North Central?
Though Philadelphia is mostly known as a city with flat, mild terrain, North Central is hillier than you might imagine. Many of its sections do have very few hills or steep changes in elevation, but if you were to walk north off of Master Street up a road like 17th Street, you will instantly notice that you are going up a steady incline. Most of the hills go up the farther north you go, but they shouldn’t prove to be too much trouble for you and your dog to traverse.
The area is still very artificial and distinctly urban, even though it is mostly a residential community. There are a few major thoroughfares, however, like Girard Avenue in the south that clog up with foot and street traffic almost any time of day. These roads are still walkable, but you and your dog may find a quieter time by staying near the center of the neighborhood.
How many greenways are there in North Central?
There is only one major park within the boundaries of North Central and there are only a handful of other options within close walking distance. Ingersoll Park, located near the very center of North Central, is a small park with open grassy areas, concrete walking paths, and tall lights that keep it bright at night. Though it isn’t the most dazzling park in Philadelphia, it is a convenient option that would suit your needs as a dog walker.
A few blocks north of the neighborhood, next to Temple University, you will find Amos Playground which is a large green space that is used for both sports and recreation by the local community. This is the largest park you will find within easy walking distance, but if you drive further east in the city, there are plenty more options you and your dog can explore. You may just need to seek them out.
