Wag! Walkers know Tank Farms and Refineries
The Tank Farms and Refineries area of Philly is just what its name says: an area filled with dozens of petroleum and chemical tanks, numerous refineries, and support buildings. There are no homes within its boundaries, but there are plenty along the borders. To the west of the TF&R area lies the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park. There are several restaurants and fast-food joints around the area to help keep your appetite satisfied. If you want an off-leash dog park or pet supply store, you have no choice but to hop in the car and go for a drive.
When it comes to going for walks in the area, spring and fall offer the best weather. Summers can be pretty hot with temperatures in the high 80s causing the pavement to become hot enough to burn paw pads. Be sure you take your walks in the morning while everything is still cold from the night.
What is the terrain like in Tank Farms and Refineries?
The terrain inside the Tank Farm & Refineries section is a blend of dirt and pavement. There are a few retention ponds and patchy areas of grass, but you and your pup can't go inside the tank farm area, so they really don't count. Outside of the tank farm is a blend of urban life, the Philadelphia International Airport, and the old Naval Yard.
The one thing you can count on is that no matter where you walk, you and your pup are going to be spending a lot of time on paved surfaces if you don’t take the time to find places with plenty of grass. Expecting your dog to walk on nothing but paved surfaces is asking a lot! But providing you give their paws plenty of time to get used to it, the two of you will be putting in the miles all around the area in search of new places to explore.
How many greenways are there in Tank Farms and Refineries?
Again, on the inside of the TF&R area, there is virtually nothing in the way of green space. If you live in the surrounding area to the east, you have the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park ready at hand. The park encompasses over 340 acres that include a 146-acre golf course, vast acres of grassland to wander around on, trails to follow, and three lakes to try your luck fishing in.
Those who live on the west side of the TF&R region can take their dogs out to Point Breeze where you will find acres of grass, trees, and trails that take you to the river and along the bank. No matter which side of the "Farm" you live on, you can take your pup to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Covering over 1,000 acres, the refuge is home to 80 species of birds and over 10 miles of trails to explore.
