Wag! Walkers know Whitman
In 2015, Whitman had the privilege of being named as one of the most family-friendly and safest neighborhoods in Philadelphia by Philadelphia Magazine. The community took its name from the Walt Whitman Bridge while it was being constructed nearby. Despite an attempt to tear the area down and build a housing project, the area has not changed much in decades. The majority of the housing here is row housing set in a perfect grid pattern. There are parks and pet supply stores nearby should you need anything for Fido. The area has several restaurants that are worth looking into and plenty of sidewalks that will take the two of you anywhere in the community.
If you like cold weather, then Whitman is the place to be with weeks of sub-freezing weather and the occasional snowstorm. For those of you who like warmer weather, summers come with temperatures in the 80s and long sunny days for you and Fido to enjoy.
What is the terrain like in Whitman?
If you were to type the word "flat" into your favorite search engine, chances are, the photo would be of the Philadelphia area. Whitman is a part of that landscape and could make walks pretty tame if you don't put a little imagination into your walks. Each block is surrounded by a sidewalk for you and Fido to use when the time comes. The bad part is that there is very little in the way of green anywhere on most blocks beyond a few empty lots which are private property.
There are two parks in the community that you should be able to walk Fido to so that the two of you can romp and play around on some real grass. Keep in mind that you need to give the pads under Fido's paws time to toughen up before you take them for long walks on paved surfaces. If you don't, they can easily get scratched or scraped.
How many greenways are there in Whitman?
Greenways are a little short on demand in the Whitman area, but fortunately, there two parks to choose from in the community and more within easy driving distance. Mifflin Square Park in the northwest corner offers a full block-sized park with walking trails, a basketball court, a playground, and plenty of grass for you and Fido to play around on.
To the south is the Murphy Recreation Center with a large athletic field in the back. A little further to the south is the 7th & Packer Baseball Fields. Here, you will find acres of baseball fields and grass. It's a bit of a drive, but there is plenty of room, making it a great place to let Fido run around on the end of a long leash.
You are also within a very short drive of FDR Park with three lakes, athletic fields, and walking trails to enjoy with your furry friend.
