Wag! Walkers know East Allegheny
Those who live in or visit East Allegheny have plenty to explore. If you are a sports fanatic, there are plenty of opportunities to see one of the three professional teams play. Otherwise, Pittsburgh is also home to a popular cultural district, plenty of unique neighborhoods, and parks with plenty of hiking and walking trails!
What is the terrain like in East Allegheny?
Beyond some major highways and roadways that go through Deutschtown, this neighborhood should be relatively pedestrian-friendly. The streets typically have sidewalks, so you and your pup won't have to share the roadways with others. Some of these sidewalks may be a bit uneven or cracked, so you should always watch yourself, but they should be relatively well-maintained.
Like many Pittsburgh neighborhoods, East Allegheny does have a few hills that you and your pup will need to navigate. One of the steepest hills reported in the United States is in Pittsburgh, but thankfully, that isn't in this neighborhood! Instead, the hills you encounter should be more rolling and not incredibly steep or difficult to walk.
The boundaries of East Allegheny include East North Street to the north, Itin Street to the east, Phineas Street and railroad tracks to the south, and Cedar Avenue to the west. The northwest corner of the neighborhood shares roadways with a local hospital, so it may be more heavily trafficked than other areas.
How many greenways are there in East Allegheny?
The second and third greenways located in this neighborhood are parklets: smaller greenways with some manicured greenery and maybe a bench to rest on. Chestnut Street Parklet is located in the northeast part of the neighborhood while Peralta Parklet is located in the southeast area. The last greenway in Deutschtown is a small community garden where pups are not welcomed.
Thankfully, there is a larger greenway immediately to the west of East Allegheny. Allegheny Commons Park-East Park is only a small part of the oldest public park in Pittsburgh. This is a great place to visit if your pup is looking for a longer walk and a bit of people watching!
