Wag! Walkers know South Oakland

South Oakland is a small neighborhood located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nestled along the north bank of the Monongahela River, South Oakland is only two and a half miles southeast of the downtown area. This small suburban neighborhood is a great mix of businesses and residential areas. Residentially, South Oakland is composed of standalone, single-family homes, town homes, and smaller apartment complexes. Commercially, you can find several churches, auto repair services, a few local and chain restaurants, a hotel, a few manufacturing and industrial businesses, and a local women's hospital.

The greater city of Pittsburgh is home to plenty of unique neighborhoods, all with distinct personalities and characteristics. The city itself has professional sports teams, several prominent colleges and universities, a variety of museums, an award-winning cultural district, and a growing food and brewery scene. Many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh are incredibly dog-friendly as there are sidewalks and parks for you to explore throughout the city!

What is the terrain like in South Oakland?

South Oakland has quite a few hills throughout the neighborhood. Many of the streets have steady and steep inclines that may pose problems for anyone with mobility issues or during icy conditions that may happen during winter months. Thankfully, the neighborhood does flatten out a bit near the shore of the Monongahela River at its southern border.

While you are traversing South Oakland's hills, you will get to use the well-maintained sidewalks that line almost all the streets in this neighborhood. Some areas are a bit uneven, so be sure to watch your step while out walking with your favorite pup.

The boundaries of South Oakland include Boulevard of the Allies and Halket Street to the north, Schenley Park to the east, Second Avenue and the Monongahela River to the south, and the Birmingham Bridge to the west. The northern par of the neighborhood is home to a local women's hospital, so it may be more heavily-trafficked than the rest of South Oakland.

How many greenways are there in South Oakland?

For a smaller neighborhood, there are a handful of public parks in the area. The largest greenway in the neighborhood, Dan Marino Field, is a spacious park that is home to several sports facilities. This could be a great place to walk through during the days, but it may be a bit crowded during weekends and nights, as community leagues are frequently playing.

There are also a few smaller greenways located throughout South Oakland. These include Lawn and Ophelia Parklet, Craft Park, Niagara Parklet, Zulema Parklet, and Bates Street Park. Additionally, there are a few greenways located on the southern border of the neighborhood, but they are not public parks, so you and your pup can't visit.

This neighborhood also shares its eastern border with Schenley Park, one of the largest public parks in Pittsburgh. This park is home to a sports complex, several historical landmarks, plenty of hiking tralis, a botanical garden, and a conservatory.
