GPS collars are among the best pet inventions in recent decades. These devices may be small, but they can be life-saving and can make a big difference in finding lost pets if they get out. As a mom of two exclusively indoor cats who want nothing more than to explore the great outdoors, I know how useful these devices can be. After all, cats are quick and love to slip outside every time the door opens!
While a GPS collar is worth its weight in gold, unfortunately, the quality can vary across brands. Moreover, there are several types of collars: cellular, Bluetooth, rechargeable, battery-operated, etc. Each type is great in its own right but caters to different needs.
In this article, we'll explore the best GPS cat collars to help you find the right one for your feline furbaby.
Overview
Tractive Cat Mini GPS Tracker
Best lightweight cat GPS collar
The Tractive CAT Mini GPS Tracker checks all the boxes when it comes to a smart tracker. At under an ounce in weight, this device might be small, but it is mighty, featuring a 7-day battery life and waterproof and impact-resistant exterior.
What's more, unlike some trackers, this one will work in 150 countries and has an unlimited range. The box comes with everything you'll need to get started, including a safety collar, two collar attachments, a charger, and, of course, the tracker.
Although you will need to start a paid subscription to access the features of this device, we still believe it is one of the best deals in the tracker market.
Available colors:
- Dark Blue
- Mint
- Brown
Tractive Cat Mini GPS Tracker
Why Wag! loves Tractive Cat mini
- Lightweight, small design that won't interfere with your kitty's adventures
- Cellular capability so you never have to worry about the collar getting out of range of your Bluetooth device or phone
- It can be tracked right from your phone and also offers insights into your pet's activities and health behaviors
- Allows you to set up parameters, and the app will alert you if your kitty goes beyond their set boundaries
- Waterproof
Considerations & concerns
- You will need to subscribe to one of their plans to access most features of this device
- Advanced app subscriptions are only available on accounts that bill annually rather than month-to-month billing, which they offer for their lower tiers
- Not suitable for cats under 7 lbs
What pet parents say about Tractive CAT mini
"This app literally changed my life in the best possible way. The peace of mind it offers me is unparalleled and priceless. I went from being a person who always had at least a tiny bit of anxiety no matter what about how her life would be over if she lost her cat to a person who was like no longer subconsciously fixated on that and has way more brain space!!! Not to mention the interface is smooth and shockingly seldom buggy. I'm a tractive truther."
"Easy to install and easy to use. [The subscription] price is okay, [although I dislike] that only the basic subscription can be paid monthly. Anything more advanced must be bought at least a year in advance. Besides that, the tracker works very well in the open."

Whistle Switch Smart Collar
Best overall GPS cat collar
Whistle GPS trackers are one of the most trusted brands in the US and one of the most popular choices for pet parents. Although the Whistle™ Switch Smart Collar is marketed for dogs, it is a great option for cat parents, too!
This dust- and waterproof device comes with two batteries, so you can always have one charged up and ready to go! All Whistle products require a subscription to the app.
Their website states that the subscription cost gains users access to the following features, "GPS location tracking, health and fitness monitoring, sleep monitoring, weight tracking, and the ability to share reports with your pet's care team."
Available colors:
- Magenta
- Gree
Whistle Switch Smart Collar
Why Wag! loves Whistle
- Comes with a 6-month warranty
- Exceptional battery life (and comes with an extra battery)
- IPX 8 waterproof rating up to depths of 6 feet
Considerations & concerns
- It is important to note that prolonged exposure to extreme temps above 100 F and below 0 F can damage the tracker
- Not for cats under 5 lbs
- It's pricey
What pet parents say about Whistle
"Before Whistle, we tried another brand that had failed/lost connection and never alerted us when it happened. The other company's support was terrible. It took days, sometimes over a week, for them to get back to us about our recurring issues. Although we were not given any kind of refund for their faulty product or subscription fee, we decided to invest in Whistle. It's all worth it to keep our little one safe!
When we received our collar from Whistle, it was just a little too big, but they were quick to send out a new collar. Their support team was fantastic to work with. It's really easy to swap out the battery when it gets low - you'll get an alert. The extra health stats are interesting, too. We highly recommend Whistle!"

Cube Real Time GPS Dog & Cat Tracker
Cube offers a variety of products for tracking, including products that clip to keys, attach to vehicles, and, you guessed it, pet collars! Cube pet trackers are a popular option for pet parents since they use cellular service rather than Bluetooth or WiFi, which are less reliable and have a much smaller range.
This tracker works off Verizon towers, which have more coverage areas across the US than any other carrier. The tracking device is 2.75 inches long and a little over an inch and a half wide, making it better for fully-grown cats than kittens.
We like the fact that this tracker is dust- and water-resistant and has a rating of IP67, which means it should be resistant to damage in water depths up to 3 feet for at least half an hour.
Keep in mind that this device is not compatible with most collars (you may have to purchase collar clips from Cube.) All in all, we feel like Cube is a great introductory option for pet parents who need a GPS collar for emergencies.
Cube GPS collar
Why Wag! loves Cube
- Thanks to the geo-fencing function, you can set boundaries for your kitty and get alerts to your phone if they leave the designated safe zone
- You can ping the device to emit a beeping noise to help you more precisely locate your kitty
- Comes with a lifetime warranty
Considerations & concerns
- Cube trackers have a battery life that can last of 10 to 60 days; however, some buyers complain their Cube has a short battery life
- Cube cell service subscription needed to access tracker functions — annual rates can be pricey
- If your app subscription ends and your pet is missing, Cube recommends not reinstating it as reconnecting can quickly deplete the tracker battery
- Some pet parents complain that it is too bulky and heavy for cats
What pet parents say about Cube
"My cat has been wearing this tracker on his collar for 9 months. It's easy to pinpoint his whereabouts, because it reports the address of the house he's strolling past, or visiting. It's very reliable in tracking him and Reporting. The only downside is the unit is rather large and weighs his collar down. It's heavy and swings to a point, under his , and beneath his neck. Luckily he's a rather large cat, so he can handle this extra heaviness."

Girafus Pro-Track
Best low tech cat GPS collar
Giarafus Pro-Track is a great option for pet parents who need to keep tabs on up to 4 animals at once. Thankfully, you can order multiple tags at once from the Amazon store, and extra tags only cost about $20 each, in addition to the base price.
This tracker does not rely on cellular networks, which means there is no monthly payment to use the service. However, it means this device doesn't have the range that cellular trackers do.
This system consists of tag(s) that connect to your pet's collar and a tracking remote with flashing lights to help you know your distance from your kitty. While it certainly isn't the most high-tech GPS collar of the bunch, it is very user-friendly for non-tech-savvy folks.
Girafus Pro-Track
Why Wag! loves Girafus Pro-Track
- Simple setup and the directions are easy to understand
- Can track up to 4 pets at once
- Lightweight design won't interfere with your kitty's activities
Considerations & concerns
- Not waterproof
- Tracker tends to slip out of the silicone holder
- Tracker's range caps out at 1,600 feet from the tracking device and can be obstructed by thick walls or terrain.
What pet parents say about Girafus Pro-Track
"If you have a sneaky little dog like mine that's really good at hide and seek (And sometimes isn't even in the house!), this is a great way to keep track of your pet (dog or cat). She wears a cat collar with Beau's Bells (Also purchased on Amazon) on it, so my family has two ways of keeping track of her now. Thankfully, she hasn't managed to sneak out of the house again, but this "Cat Tracker" so far has reduced a game of "hide and seek" from 10 minutes and over to less than 5 minutes.
To bring up some slight negatives but not enough to take away a star, it's a little expensive, but compared to other means of tracking your small pet (assuming they're an indoor pet), it's the least expensive option I've seen with the bonus of being simple to use and effective. The fact you have to change and charge the rechargeable battery (LIR2032H) that goes inside of the tracker tag every 5 days (the instructions say if the battery is 100% drained, it becomes unchargeable) is very annoying, and some people may even forget to do this critical step. However, I just put a reminder on my calendar so I don't forget, and I plan on purchasing more batteries, so I always have a charged battery for my pet's tracker tag (You can buy them on Amazon). I can't comment on its durability yet since it hasn't even been a week since I got it.
The only nitpick I have is that the screws that come with it are really TINY (There is some assembly required.). I wished it came with a tiny bag to hold them (like a really small sandwich bag or something) because they are definitely small enough to get lost themselves. To fix this issue myself, I just used the smallest snack bag I had to hold them.
Overall, (just to never have to play my dog's games again) WORTH IT."

Marco Polo Advanced Pet Monitoring, Tracking, and Locating System
Best cat GPS collar for rural areas
If you live in a rural area without cell reception or you enjoy hiking with your kitty in rural areas, this is the tracking collar for you.
The Marco Polo Advanced Pet Monitoring system doesn't rely on wifi or cellular reception to keep tabs on your pets; rather, it uses radio frequencies.
According to the website, "Marco Polo uses only its own radio signals, and it does not need cell service, a clear view of the sky for GPS reception, wifi, Bluetooth, or any other external service or device to operate. It will work, literally, anywhere on earth."
Each system comes with a handheld receiver, 2 GPS tags, 2 collar attachments, 2 USB chargers, and charging cables.
Available varieties:
- MPS - 101
- MPS 201
Marco Polo Pet Tracker
Why Wag! loves Marco Polo
- It uses radio signals from the handheld transmitter, so its functionality isn't affected by weather, cell phone reception, power outages, or Bluetooth
- Battery life can last up to 6 weeks
- Completely waterproof
- Since it doesn't rely on apps or cellular reception, there are no additional costs after buying the system
Considerations & concerns
- Not recommended for cats under 5 lbs
- Bulky and doesn't come in a variety of colors
- Pricey
What pet parents say about Marco Polo
"Great for fringe areas and does not require cell towers/wifi/crowds. If there's a natural disaster, I'd rather have this product than rely on cell reception anyway. Live by the beach in densely populated area but range is still spotty, so it's been a good purchase that should last a long time. My cat likes the collar. Gets excited and purrs when I offer it. Doesn't mind wearing it throughout the day. It doesn't work as well as I'd like in areas with lots of buildings and brick walls, but that's obvious and true for any product like this. Raising it higher helps. The instructions were very good. Read the instructions and you're good. It's perfect for my needs on the Monitor mode because the threshold is my driveway when I store it in the kitchen (it's based on radius I think), so it beeps at the right time. I chose this over the latest app-based tech offerings and would choose it again because it's more effective and will last many years [with] old-school (stable/reliable) technology."
