Clarksville is a neighborhood located just west of Austin, Texas’s downtown core. This highly walkable neighborhood has many local eateries, shops, a graffiti park, the HOPE Outdoor Gallery, and a historic landmark, Treaty Oak. Commercial corridors on Lamar Boulevard, West Lynn Street, and 6th Street provide interesting walking destinations with unique establishments along pedestrian-friendly corridors.

Dog owners can find the local pet supply stores, Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming Austin and Tomlinson’s Feed Supply, in the area and several veterinary services that are easily accessible. Dog friendly restaurants where pets can join their owners in outdoor setting venues, include Cipollina, Zocalo Taqueria Fresco Cafe, Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill, and The Grove Wine Bar and Kitchen.

Austin has warm, dry weather most of the year and extremely hot temperatures in summer. When walking with your pup in the summer, ensure that heat-related illnesses do not become a problem by taking shorter walks at cooler times of the day.

Clarksville is a historic neighborhood occupying 123 acres. This diverse neighborhood has several commercial corridors with modest local shops and strip malls, bungalows, and Victorian homes that reflect its origins in 1871. A large apartment complex is situated on the southwest corner of the community while most homes are moderate character homes with well-landscaped properties.

A railroad track runs along the southwest border while Shoal Creek and its greenway trail run along the northeast side. The creek and tracks impede foot traffic, except at pedestrian crossings on main thoroughfares. The terrain varies with some relatively level sections with only slight inclines and some hillier areas, especially on the west side of the community.

Sidewalks are prevalent along roadways and large trees lining residential streets create shady walkways that are ideal for a stroll with your pup. The river is just a short distance to the south and large greenways are in close proximity for pet owners and their canine companions.

The Pease District Park is located just to the north of Clarksville and provides 42 acres of urban greenway. Shoal Creek runs through the park and the Shoal Creek Trail runs along the creek. Multiple walking paths in the greenway are an excellent place to walk with your leashed dog.

Located within Clarksville's borders is the West Austin Neighborhood Park and the West Austin Dog Park. The dog park is an enclosed off-leash area with bags, toys, a water supply, seating for owners to supervise their pups, and lots of shade. The larger park has a pool, open lawns, and a playground. Stone retaining walls along paths and a picturesque greenway make this park well worth the visit for Clarksville dog walkers.

A short distance to the east is the Duncan Neighborhood Park and, to the south, is the river and waterside greenways, including Ladybird Lake-Lamar Beach Metropark where numerous amenities and walking trails invite a leisurely stroll or an energetic hike with your hound.
