Like many of the surrounding neighborhoods of Bellingham, Samish has a rural feel to it that makes living in this area feel as relaxed as any neighborhood could. You will find an abundance of green areas and lots of trees, making walking down the street feel like a stroll through the country. You will find a mix of homes here from small, older homes to some of the newer developments. You won’t find a lot of amenities in Samish but head a little way to the north and you will find plenty of restaurants and stores.
The climate in Bellingham is much like the rest of western Washington: mild with the occasional heavy rainstorm off the Pacific, but Bellingham is subject to the occasional bout of cold air, wind, and snow from the Fraser Valley as well. Summers are mild, however, so you can expect to be able to walk year-round with a few exceptions.
What is the terrain like in Samish?
Most of Samish is quite hilly and, in fact, this area has some of the highest elevations around Bellingham with some of the ridges topping off at 800 feet. That means that in addition to some awesome views of the bay, you have some seriously challenging walks if that's what you want. Even the cross streets are subject to some rolling elevation changes.
Many of these roads are rural in nature, narrow, and have no sidewalks. You should be more careful where you walk and take certain safety precautions such as wearing bright clothing and walking towards oncoming traffic. It's also suggested that you take a drive around the neighborhood, especially if you are just starting out, and plan out a route before you walk. The steep hills may pose issues for out of shape dogs or people and you may be able to devise a safe route to ensure your success.
How many greenways are there in Samish?
There is one small park towards the center of the neighborhood in addition to the much larger recreational area at the south end of Samish. Ridgemont has a large grassy area as well as some trees and a playground. But if you want to let your pup really stretch their legs, the best destination is Lake Padden Park. Not only are there plenty of trails, but there is a large lake and access to the Lake Padden Dog Park as well. This dog park offers plenty of grass and trees, so you can let your dogs really wander around and explore.
Finally, there is also the Sehome Hill Arboretum which, while not in Samish, is close to homes in the northern end of the neighborhood. Home to lots of native species, there are plenty of trails here and the area does allow dogs as long as you keep them on a leash.
