Wag! Walkers know South Bellingham
Part of what gives Bellingham its charm and makes it such a desirable place to live is that you can drive outside the city less and be in residential areas that look more rural than urban. South Bellingham is just minutes away from the center of the city. You will not find a lot of amenities here, but what few are available are located along the northern perimeter of the neighborhood. You will find food and drink here and your pup's veterinarian as well. But you will have to venture much farther out for any type of store that will carry any other treats or foods for canine companions.
Bellingham’s weather is almost as perfect as its scenery. It can get rainy when Pacific storms roll through and there is the rare snowstorm that can bring life to a screeching halt but temperatures are otherwise quite mild and the vast majority of the year is walkable.
What is the terrain like in South Bellingham?
This neighborhood is still sparsely populated in most areas and most of the roads are narrow country roads with no shoulders or sidewalks. These areas might be difficult to walk because, while they may not have a lot of traffic, visibility can be poor and you are forced to walk on the side of the road which can be a bit hazardous. Some of the more populated areas to the north are slightly more walkable.
The area has a lot of undeveloped lots that may be walkable, but it is important to make sure that you check to see who owns the land and whether it is private property. There are some hills to the north, but overall, this area is very walkable and won’t pose a problem in terms of difficulty. In the south, there are more hills and winding roads and these communities are probably not the safest place to walk your pooch.
How many greenways are there in South Bellingham?
Fortunately, this area does have a lot of green spaces you can visit. Some of them are within walking distance but others will require a car to get to. Fairhaven Park is to the northwest and offers two shorter trails as well as having the Whatcom County and Bellingham Interurban Trail running through it. This trail runs for a long direction in both ways. There is lots of grass, shade, and places to sit. Your pup can even stop for something to drink here but make sure to bring your own drinking containers!
Farther south is Arroyo Park which also has several large trails that run through it. This park is an off-leash park and you can let Sparky roam the trails under their own power.
Finally, Woodstock Park is at the southwestern corner of South Bellingham. It is right off of the bay, so there will be a nice breeze and some beautiful scenery to enjoy.
