"Eclectic" is a word often used for Eastlake, a busy little neighborhood on the east side of Lake Union. What was once a shanty town for migrant workers that helped build the Lake Washington Ship Canal is now a hip place to call home. This neighborhood is a mix of housing and commercial space with everything from single-family homes to apartments and houseboats!
This patchwork community also has a wild mix of retail that includes coffee shops, outdoor dining, and some of the oldest stores and restaurants in the city. You can find grooming and vets close by, but for pet supplies, you will likely have to either head across the canal to the University District or into downtown Seattle.
Weather is mild in Seattle and walking is an activity that much of the population enjoys year-round. Rain and wind are the only barriers you will encounter in getting out, except for the exceedingly rare snow storm.
What is the terrain like in Eastlake?
Built on the side of the lake, the Eastlake area is hilly, but it is not nearly as bad as a lot of the other neighborhoods in Seattle. For the most part, the hills are manageable and walking in a north-south direction helps the terrain level out considerably.
Of greater concern is that the hills in this area are frequently congested. As long as you stay to one side or the other of Eastlake Avenue, the traffic is not terrible, but the minute you try to cross here or by the Interstate, you will have to deal with more cars and wait longer to get where you are going. Sidewalks are available which does help, but stoplights are only about every three blocks along the main road, so if you do need to cross, you may have to go out of your way to do so.
Be advised that the older roads do not necessarily have sidewalks and may be difficult to navigate with a pup.
How many greenways are there in Eastlake?
There are a few small parks in Eastlake, but since this is a small neighborhood, that is not surprising. The largest of the parks is Rogers Playground which has a large lawn and trees. There are several mini parks along the waterfront, all of which have at least a little bit of grass and a few trees.
Fairview Park is also a waterfront park but is a bit larger and has places to sit and a large grassy field. This park is up near the north end of Eastlake. If you are looking for something that is a bit larger, but not too far away, you can head up the hill to Volunteer Park. The area has a conservatory, play area, and museum.
Finally, just a bit farther east is Interlaken Park which is 51 acres of densely wooded area and dirt paths. This urban gem is less than two miles away from Eastlake and makes a perfect place to take your pup.
