For decades, Greenwood in north Seattle has been the cultural hub of the northern reaches of the city. This is where families headed when they wanted to see a movie, go to the zoo for the day, or just have a day of shopping on the main streets of the neighborhood. Today, it remains much the same, but it has evolved with the times to provide for the needs of its neighbors. You can still find just about anything here and that includes all Fluffy needs.
There are pet stores and grooming shops scattered throughout, including many boutique style shops that fit the atmosphere of the neighborhood. Known for its coffee shops, delis, and grocery stores, you won’t ever have to go hungry or thirsty on your walk. Stopping for a cup of hot coffee while walking your dog on a cool fall morning is almost mandatory. Luckily, Seattle climate allows for walking pretty much year around.
What is the terrain like in Greenwood?
Like most of the areas in north Seattle, sidewalks are rare and, here in Greenwood, that can present a bit of a problem. You will find sidewalks down the main roads such as Greenwood Avenue and NW 85th Street, but in the residential areas, there are few.
The neighborhood is quite old and when it was originally built, it was not nearly as crowded as it is now. Cars tend to park on the sides of the roads and with no sidewalks and a fair amount of traffic coming down them, it can make it dicey to walk on these roads. The main roads are even busier and there are a lot of stop lights, but at least most of these roads do have safe places to get off the street.
The area is hilly in spots, but there are plenty of areas that are flat here as well, giving you options as to how much of a workout Fluffy is up for.
How many greenways are there in Greenwood?
Greenwood is an old neighborhood that has an increasingly urban feel to it as time goes on, but you do have a few options if you want to find a place for your pup to roll in the grass and sniff the greenery. Sandel Park is at the center of the neighborhood and encompasses an entire city block. It is just a couple of blocks off of the main road through town, so it is easy to access on foot. The park has some nice wide-open spaces for playing and makes a good perimeter walk.
Just a few blocks to the east is Greenwood Park. It is a bit smaller, but it also has paths available for walking on which make a good alternative to crowded city streets.
In the north part of the neighborhood, you will find part of the greenway system that is connected to Carkeek Park. This park runs along the Puget Sound and is a total of 220 acres.
