Wag! Walkers know Loyal Heights
A smaller neighborhood nestled inside of Ballard, this area is inhabited by a few small businesses, but is primarily all residential. Most of the commercial businesses in the area can be found along 15th Avenue where you will find coffee houses and restaurants as well as convenience stores.
For Raider’s treats and toys, you can look to the north in Crown Hill where there is an abundance of places to treat them with the best goodies. Loyal Heights also has its own groomer and vet.
Walking is a pleasure in the mild weather of Seattle. There are few temperature extremes and the few you will see will be very short lived. Rain and wind will be your biggest impediment to walking, but on the average year, these storms are also short lived. Most days have at least a little bit of a dry spot in them that allows Raider to go get some fresh air and stretch their legs.
What is the terrain like in Loyal Heights?
Most of Seattle is built on hills and Loyal Heights is no exception. You will find a mix of some fairly steep elevations with rolling hills and some flat areas. In Loyal Heights, it will be hard to walk without having to walk up a few hills, but it is possible to plan a route where the hills are manageable for small legs and elderly pups if that is what you need.
This is a more urban neighborhood, so there is more traffic than many of the other north Seattle neighborhoods. You will need to be careful crossing streets because there are few traffic lights and traffic can be quite heavy. Most of the area has sidewalks and, at the north end of the neighborhood, there are also alleys between the houses that allow for some quieter walking. Shoulders on many of the roads have grass and trees, making them a much more pleasant walk.
How many greenways are there in Loyal Heights?
Living in an urban area, you are often forced to give up green spaces for the convenience of living close to city conveniences. Loyal Heights does not have close access to any larger greenways, but it has two parks of its own.
Loyal Heights Playfield has a walking path that is off the busy streets of this area. There is not a lot of accessible grass since the central area is a sporting field, but there is a small amount of grass and trees between the path and the road.
Loyal Heights also has access to Golden Gardens Park off Loyal Way at the northwest corner of the neighborhood. Golden Gardens is a beachfront park off the Puget Sound with an abundance of trails and a dog off-leash area. You will have to access this one by car, but it is only a few minutes from the neighborhood and well worth the excursion.
