Wag! Walkers know Chief Garry Park

Chief Garry Park is a mixed-use neighborhood east of downtown Spokane. The Spokane community college is located here and there is a commercial thoroughfare, E Trent Avenue, lined with businesses and services including shops and restaurants. There are also small local businesses located throughout the area making the neighborhood highly walkable. Additional facilities and services are concentrated on the southwest corner of Chief Garry Park.

Spokane dog walkers in Chief Fort Garry should have good winter wear for sub-freezing winter temperatures and snowy, icy conditions to stay warm and avoid slipping on frozen surfaces. Remember that your dog can fall and become injured too, so try to avoid treacherous footing. Summers are warm and dry and generally nice for walking, however, if the temperatures spikes, you and your pup might want to walk earlier or later in the day to avoid midday heat and the possibility of heat-related illnesses.

What is the terrain like in Chief Garry Park?

Chief Garry Park is bordered by the Spokane River along the north and west border, train tracks along the south side of the community, and N Fancher Road along the east side. This community is a well-established residential neighborhood with older unique homes on large well-landscaped properties. The terrain is flat and there are sidewalks or grassy berms along most residential streets providing safe walkways for pedestrians and pets.

Along the south side, there are commercial areas and facilities and this section of the Chief Garry Park neighborhood has less landscaping and more traffic. Be careful crossing major commercial roads or train tracks that border and run through the neighborhood in the area with your dog. Keep your pet securely leashed and use designated pedestrian crossings.

Natural areas along the river make attractive areas for walking with your dog, however, undeveloped or maintained trails or greenways here can have treacherous conditions, especially if the river is high, so use caution.

How many greenways are there in Chief Garry Park?

The Chief Garry Park neighborhood boasts a park of the same name. Chief Garry Park is 10.76 acres in size and has a shelter, picnic sites, basketball courts, public art, a playground, and splash pad. The area is mostly open lawn with large shade trees, creating a shady canopy to walk and play with your canine companion under.

There is a pedestrian trail along the river that connects with the Iron Bridge to cross the river. On the north shore of the river, dog walkers can then access the Centennial Trail that runs for 37.5 miles with enough hiking opportunities for even the most hyper hound!  Users include cross-country skiers in winter, some sections are accessible to equestrians, and joggers, skaters, cyclists, and people with fishing gear accessing the river also use the trail, so keep your dog leashed and be respectful to other users. Stay off ski tracks in winter and clean up after your pet.
