Flagstaff, Arizona may be a pit-stop for most American road trippers, after all, the Grand Canyon is only an hour and a half away, and Phoenix only two. But many will miss out on what this scenic Southwestern town has to offer: proximity to seven National parks and nature preserves, views of surrounding mountains, and ideal conditions for stargazing on cool, cloudless summer nights (there's even the Lowell Observatory tower if you don't have your own telescope). It's no wonder that local greenways only reiterate the beauty and serenity that the American Southwest is associated with. A compiled list of nearby parks and trails, all of which are no more than a 12-minute drive from the Flagstaff Ranch neighborhood, illustrates just how simple it is to give your dog a walk that's not only a workout for you both but also an escape into pine-veiled forests and winding red-dirt paths.
University Highlands Park
Utilized by the young families in the area, this neighborhood park is a near an elementary school and comes equipped with a playground and soccer fields. If your dog is anxious around children, this may not be the walking route for you. Simple sidewalks line the area and also pave their way through the suburb, allowing you to walk in the park, but also to the park if a longer walk duration were desired.
Ponderosa Trails Park
Wide-set paths and uninterrupted landscape make this park ideal for dogs who love running alongside a jogging or biking companion. There's a quaint playground area complete with a bike rack, trash cans (for poop bags!) and water fountains (for a thirsty pup!).
Fort Tuthill County Park
Near the airport, this park is furthest from Flagstaff Ranch but offers the most acreage and shade. A large, sandy playground is available for kids and adults alike, and the trails are wide. So wide, in fact, that this is a popular space for running marathons to be held.
