Mesa Del Sol is a unique residential community about a 15-minute drive west of Yuma, Arizona. There are businesses in the vicinity along the freeway to the south, but not all services are accessible on foot if they are on the opposite side of the road. Luckily there are some closer fast food and coffee shops nearby to enjoy. The Foothills Animal Hospital is also located just across the freeway and can be reached with a short trip by vehicle.

The climate in Yuma is a hot desert climate and Yuma is one of the sunniest places in the world with very little rain! If you walk your dog daily, you will rarely have to contend with wet conditions and the temperature rarely falls below freezing. The temperature rises to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, however, which makes walking uncomfortable. Choose to walk your dog first thing in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the extreme heat.

Mesa Del Sol has some unique landscaping. The Mesa Del Sol Golf Course winds through the neighborhood and many homes in the area back onto this green space. Golfers cross residential streets in several areas to access other parts of the course and dogs are not welcome there.

The Mesa Del Sol region is surrounded by natural areas and there are desert hills and rugged terrain to the east. Interstate 8 runs along the south border of the community and there is a large interchange at Fortuna Road which runs along the western border. The freeway and interchange areas are not pedestrian-friendly and should be avoided but the residential area is flat with large homes and is well-landscaped. Some homes have lawns and traditional shade trees although many have more desert-friendly, drought-tolerant landscaping. There are sidewalks available so you don't have to share roads with vehicles, but remember that boots to protect your dog's paws may be advisable.

Mesa Del Sol residents can take their dog to the Fortuna Dog Play and Waterpark which is just a 6-minute drive to the south. This fully enclosed dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs, water on site, toys, and waste disposal facilities available. The park is a great opportunity to let your dog play off-leash!

Just east along the interstate, the Telegraph Pass Trailhead allows access to the desert hills and mountain and rocky terrain to the east. Part of the trail has a concrete path which can be hard on a dog's feet, so paw protection is advised. This trail is a steep hike with rocky terrain, so be prepared with sunscreen, water, and good footwear. The views from the top of this trail are worthwhile, but it can be a challenging walk, so make sure you and your canine buddy are ready to traverse it!
