Wag! Walkers know Siesta Acres

Siesta Acres is a residential mobile home community on the north side of Yuma, Arizona. Residential streets in the area are walkable, however, there are no commercial services available within easy walking distance.

Residents with canine companions in their household who enjoy taking their pup for daily walks will not be hampered by cold weather or rain in Yuma! This desert climate rarely experiences rain or below-freezing temperatures. The hot, desert climate, however, can make walking during the daytime in summer months an issue. The temperatures frequently go above 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the daytime, which is too hot for comfortably walking your pooch. Not only is there a danger of overheating, but hot pavement can burn your dog's paws. Avoid walking in the heat of the day, choose cooler times such as early morning or later in the evening, and protect your dog's paws from the hot pavement with doggie booties.

What is the terrain like in Siesta Acres?

Siesta Acres is a residential neighborhood with mobile homes. Properties and yards are often fenced and have mature trees and landscaping. A large undeveloped area is situated south of the neighborhood where future development may occur. There is an RV park on the east side and an industrial area. These areas are not pedestrian=friendly and do not make good walking destinations.

There is a canal bordering the neighborhood on the north side with berms on either side where pedestrians can walk, but dirt footing can create dusty conditions. The canal area is also exposed to the sun with no shade. Siesta Estates itself is flat with no steep hills to climb, however, and there are large shade trees on properties that provide cover to residential roads. The neighborhood itself does not have sidewalks, so watch out for vehicles on roadways, avoid movement when it heats up, keep your dog leashed, and walk facing oncoming traffic to stay safe.

How many greenways are there in Siesta Acres?

Just northeast of Siesta Estates, Joe Henry Memorial Park has trees and ramadas to provide shade and green lawns that provide a respite from the desert landscape. There is also a playground and sports facilities and fields here. A paved pedestrian path creates a small greenway for walking your dog on a leash and there are restroom facilities located here as well.

Just east of this park, West Wetlands Park provides 110 acres of space with many multi-use trails. Trees and open grassy areas in this nature preserve provide an ideal walking location and there is plenty of activity in the park with barbecues, picnics, fishing, boating, swimming, and social gatherings. If your dog likes the water, there are ponds and the Colorado River located here. When using Yuma parks, it is important to clean up after your dog to be respectful to other park users, so remember to be courteous!
