The Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound is a scent hound bred primarily for hunting foxes. However, they can also be wonderful family pets and guard dogs. They are big dogs who are kind and gentle but also need lots of exercise and space to run around. As a responsible pet parent, you should only consider adopting one of these dogs if you have a big enough house with a yard. They should not be left alone inside for too long, as they can get bored and develop destructive behavior. These dogs are nice around strangers and get along well with other dogs too, as long as they are properly trained and socialized as puppies.

Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound Breed History

The Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound is one of the four types of American Foxhound. The other types are the drag hound, slow trailing hound and the field trial hound. The Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound was bred as a scent hound and were mainly used for hunting foxes. It is documented that this breed was crossed with the Bloodhound in the 18th century which led to the creation of the Black and Tan Coonhound. They  originate from Virginia, United States and were selected as the official breed of the state in 1966. Their ancestry is thought to include French, Irish and English hounds. Robert Brooke had brought several hunting dogs to America in 1650 and they remained in the family for over 300 years. These dogs would later lead to the creation of a variety of American hounds, including the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound. This breed would also not be here if it weren’t for the crossbreeding of George Washington’s French Foxhounds, which were gifted to him from the Marquis de Lafayette, with Brooke’s hunting dogs. They are a fairly rare and unrecognized breed at this point in time.

Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound Breed Maintenance

As with all dog breeds, the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound has certain needs and requires maintenance to keep them happy and healthy. When these dogs are younger, they need to be fed more often. A puppy between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks should be fed four times per day, and three times per week if they are between the ages of 3 and 6 months. A dog who is aged between 6 months and a year should have two meals per day, and once they turn one year old, they will only need to be fed once, although two lighter meals would also work. Your dog would love other treats such as cheese, fruits and veggies or cooked eggs, but they should be given in moderation. Make sure that your dog always has fresh water available. They should also be brushed regularly and checked for fleas and ticks. They will need to be brushed more often during shedding seasons, but should only need to be bathed a few times per year. Like all dogs, they will also need to have their teeth brushed as often as possible to maintain dental health and need to have their ears cleaned as well in order to prevent infections.

Although they are born as hunters, these dogs are just as suited to a life as a companion pet in a loving family.

Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound Activity Requirements

Because these dogs are so large, they are not the best suited to apartments as they need room to run. This breed would be happiest living in a home that has access to a yard. They are highly active dogs that should be exercised for at least 45 to 60 minutes per day. They can easily get bored and will try to find a way to keep themselves entertained. This can lead to some destructive behavior, and therefore you may not want to keep them stuck inside alone for too long. You may have to limit the amount of food that you give your dog, as the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound is known to be an easy keeper that will gain weight easily. An obese dog is unhealthy and can lead to some health issues.
