Wire Foxy Rat Terrier Breed History

The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier is a 50/50 mix of his parents the American Rat Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. He displays many of their characteristics and traits. The American Rat Terrier was bred for speed. His fast responses enabled him to be a superior ratter. He was often used on ships to control the rodent populations. British immigrants are believed to have brought the small dogs to America where they quickly gained popularity. They became a favorite pet of farmers across the United States because they helped keep the vermin in check. Nowadays, police departments use the small dogs to search for contraband because they have a keen sense of smell and they are highly intelligent, so they learn quickly. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the American  Rat Terrier in 2010 and entered them into the Miscellaneous Group. The Wire Fox Terrier is an old breed whose origins can be traced back to England. The dog is believed to be a descendant of the now extinct rough-coated working Terrier which was common throughout Wales, Durham, and Derbyshire. The Wire Fox Terrier was bred to be a fearless hunter and to pursue a fox into its den without hesitation. The dog's short and robust docked tail served as a handle for the hunter. The hunter would reach down into the burrow and pull the dog out by his tail so the fox could then be finished off. The American Kennel Club first recognized the Wire Fox Terrier in 1885 but it was grouped with the Smooth Fox Terrier and they were considered the same breed. It was not until 1984 that the American Kennel Club officially separated the two breeds. The Wire Fox Terrier was placed in the AKC's Terrier Group.

Wire Foxy Rat Terrier Breed Appearance

The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier is a scruffy little guy. His hair sticks up in a wiry fashion all over his body. It has a generally unkempt appearance that makes him darling to behold. His ears usually stand upright and tip over at the tip. The tail turns up over his back and makes a slight bend. Some breeders dock their puppies tails prior to sale. His eyes and nose are usually black and stand out in stark contrast against his coat. He carries himself with a gait of determination and spunk.

Wire Foxy Rat Terrier Breed Maintenance

The short coat of the Wire Foxy Rat Terrier is easy to groom. Give him a quick brushing once a week to break away any loose hair and keep his coat shiny. Once a month, you can give him a bath to remove any doggy odor. Like so many small dogs, he can suffer from gum disease so start brushing his teeth a few times a week to remove any plaque buildup and prevent periodontal disease later in life. His small ears benefit from a quick wipe out once a week to remove any accumulation of earwax or dirt. His nails should be checked regularly for length; discomfort can occur if they get too long.

Wire Foxy Rat Terrier Temperament

The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier has a strong prey drive, like his parent breeds. He likes to hunt, so great care should be taken around tiny pets. Owners should always keep their dog on a leash because this little pistol of a dog will take off in a heartbeat to chase a squirrel or some other small rodent. He is a smart little guy and a delight around children. This active scamp loves to go for walks and play. He also likes downtime and will curl up on his owner’s lap for some much-needed snuggle time. He can be a bit barky if he hears a noise or sees a stranger. His high intelligence makes him easy to train in general obedience and easier than most small dogs to housebreak.

Wire Foxy Rat Terrier Activity Requirements

The Wire Foxy Rat Terrier loves to go for walks. He is an alert little guy and takes in everything that is going on around him. Ideally, he should be taken for a walk at least once a day. He enjoys playing outside in a fenced yard but you should watch him closely because he can be a digger in his hunt for vermin. Indoors, give him plenty of toys to keep him occupied and happy. As a puppy, he tends to be a chewer so give him lots of things to chew on so he doesn't chew your shoes.

Bubbie was a street dog and would wonder throughout the neighborhood looking for shoes to steal. He would stop and sit with my husband on the porch seeking some love and attention. He is now a part of our family. He doesn't leave my husband's side.
