Wire Pom Terrier Breed History

While the history of the Wire Pom Terrier and origin of its creation is relatively unknown, the parentage of both the Pomeranian and the Wire Fox Terrier are far more traceable. The Wire Fox Terrier, which originated in early 18th century Wales, was initially bred for hunting fox and other small ground game. Fast and agile, the Wire Fox Terrier’s keen sense of smell made it the ideal hunting companion. The Pomeranian, or “Pom” as is the case here, is the modern-day descendent of what used to be a much larger German sheep herding dog. Once a popular breed with Queen Charlotte of England, the Pomeranian evolved into show dogs, eventually shrinking down to the size they are today. This breed, just like the Wire Fox Terrier, has a sort of energetic exuberance and cleverness that is likely directly descended from the breed’s days as an active herding animal. Both breeds are commonly recognized by the American Kennel Club; however, their more modern hybrid has not yet been widely accepted as a breed. Since the early 1900’s the Pomeranian has been a highly popular dog breed in North America – consistently ranking in the top 15 most popular dog breeds - while the Wire Fox Terrier is typically lesser known. As an independent breed, the Wire Pom Terrier is quite new and has yet to show any sort of major presence in media or pop culture. However, due to the adorable nature of the dog and its compatibility with other humans and animals, it is unlikely this dog will remain unknown for long.

Wire Pom Terrier Breed Appearance

The Wire Pom Terrier is a small dog with a predominantly short, boxy snout and a thick coat of fur. This breed can possess a variety of coat colorings, including sable and liver, and its medium-length fur is often a combination of straight and wiry; two strong genetic details passed down from its predecessors. Because of the range of coat shades, it is likely that pups in the same litter will have an array of colorings. The Wire Pom Terrier’s fur is thick around the neck and requires weekly brushing to ensure it does not become tangled or matted. Its face shape largely resembles that of the Pomeranian, though the more square-shaped snout is inherited from the Wire Fox Terrier. Dark black or brown eyes are most common, while blue eyes are far rarer. Its ears stand straight to a point and are typically covered in longer strands of hair. The Wire Pom Terrier is a perfect combination of its parents, with an adorable face you can’t help but fall in love with.

Wire Pom Terrier Breed Maintenance

Aside from requiring some attention and energy release, the Wire Pom Terrier is a very low-maintenance breed. Brushing should occur at least once per week in order to avoid the dog’s fur becoming tangled, while bathing can be held on a monthly basis or simply as needed. Due to the combination of wiry and straight fur, the Pom Terrier’s natural oils do not build up rapidly, meaning the dog’s fur stays cleaner longer. As a small dog, dental care for the Wire Pom Terrier may be more challenging. It is highly recommended that the dog’s teeth be brushed at least once per day in order to prevent various dental diseases or complications. Ear care and maintenance is also particularly important for the Wire Pom Terrier. Wire Fox Terriers and Pomeranians both are known to be more prone to ear infections, so the Wire Pom Terrier requires bi-weekly ear cleanings to ensure this does not occur.

Wire Pom Terrier Temperament

This high-energy sometimes-rebel rouser is a hunting aficionado with a mind for puzzle solving. Due to the Wire Pom Terrier’s rather tenacious nature, it is recommended that these dogs be allowed to explore under strict supervision. Very goal-oriented, it is highly possible that these dogs might chase a squirrel up a tree and out of the yard, so a home with a fenced-in outdoor area would be highly ideal. Overall, the animal’s inclination toward training is moderate at best. Higher energy levels mean a greater demand for activity throughout the day and shorter attention spans, but this dog can also make for a perfectly cozy lapdog depending on its mood. While one of the breed’s parents, the Wire Fox Terrier, is considered to be hypoallergenic, the Wire Pom Terrier is not completely allergen-free. Shedding still may occur depending upon the type of coat the dog has inherited, while other dogs within the same breed may require semi-frequent grooming.

Wire Pom Terrier Activity Requirements

With parentage that descends from two highly inquisitive and energetic dogs, the Wire Pom Terrier enjoys activity and exploration. However, this little guy also inherited the Pomeranian’s frequent love of naps and ironclad loyalty, so the Wire Pom Terrier can also make for a great lap dog and household companion. Extremely adaptable to its environment, this breed is suited to houses and apartments alike. For properties with yards, it is best to have a fence in order to reign in this curious, nosy creature. Wire Pom Terriers are suited for all areas, urban and rural, and can thrive in all climates.
