Atwater Village is a small, largely residential community located six miles from downtown Los Angeles and along the Los Angeles River. The community is well-known for its community farmer's markets, local eats and coffee-shops, and unique stores full of handmade jewelry and home goods. The residential areas of Atwater Village are largely composed of standalone, single-family homes, but there are a few apartment complexes as well. Commercial spaces include local and chain restaurants, grocery stores, public schools, access to public transportation, a public library, and plenty of locally-owned stores.

Atwater Village, like the rest of Los Angeles, has a mild, drier climate. Most of the rainfall happens during the winter months while the summer months remain relatively dry. Average temperatures never get too hot or cold meaning you will likely have plenty of perfect days for a walk along the riverside! Just remember to keep an eye out for hot pavement which may affect sensitive paws.

Mostly Hilly
As a neighborhood, Atwater Village is mostly flat, however, as you move southwest in the neighborhood, you will experience a small incline. This is perfect for dogs who are less physically adept or older with joints that are not quite up to the challenge. Beyond that, Atwater Village is mostly artificial terrain with a few natural spaces along the Los Angeles River. However, most of this neighborhood does have well-maintained sidewalks and the residential areas have large trees which will help provide shade on hot summer walks! The northern part of the neighborhood is largely artificial and has few trees or public grassy areas.

The boundaries of Atwater Village include Ventura Freeway to the north, San Fernando Boulevard to the east, and the Los Angeles River to the south and west. Other major roadways that may be best to avoid as a pedestrian include Los Feliz Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard.

For a smaller neighborhood, Atwater Village does have several greenways including North Atwater Park, Chevy Chase Park, Los Feliz Golf Course, Glassell Park Recreation Center Complex and its respective greenways, Glassell Park Community Garden, and Glenhurst Park. North Atwater Park, the largest greenway in Atwater Village, has baseball, volleyball, and basketball courts, a playground, and a picnic area for you and your pup to enjoy. In these areas, you'll want to keep an eye out for local leash laws.

However, immediately to the west of Atwater Village is an extremely large greenway comprised of several public parks including Griffith Park. Griffith Park is home to the Los Angeles Zoo, The Greek Theater, plenty of hiking and equestrian trails, gardens, and an observatory. This park thankfully does have a dog park, where your pup can have a little off-leash exercise and socialize with other dogs from the same area.
