Wag! Walkers know Baldwin Hills
Baldwin Hills is a beautiful neighborhood in the south of Los Angeles. It is named as such because it includes the Baldwin Hills Mountain Range, just south of the Santa Monica Mountains, with the Pacific Ocean to the west. From Baldwin Hills, you can look down upon the Los Angeles Basin.
Baldwin Hills is a very residential area and, unfortunately, is slightly lacking in shopping malls and other places where pet amenities might be available. To the west, on the border with Culver City, you have ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital. It will offer you all the veterinary services you should need within a close distance of the neighborhood. Rebecca Setler’s Dog Training School can be found on Don Diablo Drive in the east of Baldwin Hills. The neighborhood may not be full of amenities, but there are, at least, the important ones for local dog owners to use and access. Whether you need health services or training, you have options!
What is the terrain like in Baldwin Hills?
Baldwin Hills is an incredibly hilly, mountainous area just as its name suggests. Because of this, it is not always an easy walk. At the hottest time of the year when LA can become sweltering, it can often be difficult to traverse the terrain if you are not used to the heat. If your pooch has a thick coat preparing him for cold winters, be careful not to walk him during the hottest parts of the day and be sure to bring plenty of water for him and yourself!
Baldwin Hills is a perfect balance of neighborhood residences, sidewalks, and roads with the wild national park of the hills themselves. This means that wherever you are in the neighborhood, you’re never far from a relaxed countryside walk. However, the terrain will be incredibly steep and sometimes difficult to traverse based on your fitness levels, so remember to wear proper footwear and be prepared for a rough hike!
How many greenways are there in Baldwin Hills?
There are a few major greenways in the Baldwin Hills area. Most of these are connected to one another and border the residential neighborhood to the west. Even further west, you have the hills themselves which can also be explored. Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is a gorgeous 308-acre park which provides a number of different activities including a workout area, athletic fields and tracks, and a number of different walking trails that are ideal for taking your canine friend for a long stroll. There are some great scenic views in this area, so it is ideal for weekend walks.
Jim Gilliam Park is slightly east of Kenneth Hahn. It is a more standard-sized park with your traditional recreation areas, ballparks, and sports courts. It’s ideal to reach if you live anywhere near South La Brea Avenue. It is a beautifully peaceful place, perfect for letting your pooch off the leash to enjoy a spot of nature!
