The Crenshaw neighborhood is often associated with Baldwin Hills and Baldwin Village to the southwest. The two communities are divided by the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard which divides Crenshaw from Baldwin Village and runs at an angle through the two communities. Residential streets to the north of this thoroughfare join at a right angle and then curve to become north-south running residential streets that are laid out in a more familiar grid-like pattern.

The terrain is relatively flat with no hills or slopes to hike up which makes the area easier to traverse on foot for everyone including residents and canines with mobility issues. Crenshaw homes consist mainly of single-family bungalows featuring different architectural styles. Most homes have landscaped yards with lawns, trees, and other features. The area also contains low-rise apartment buildings, condominiums, and apartment complexes. Some apartment complexes have landscaped grounds that provide shady trees and lawns for residents.
