Wag! Walkers know El Sereno
El Sereno is on the east side of Los Angeles. It was originally a Native American village called Otsunga. It was attractive to both Native Americans and early Western settlers because of a stream that ran through it called Arroyo Rosa de Castilla. Early Spanish settlers used the area for cattle grazing and in the 1780s, the Spanish governor gave these lands to Jose Maria Verdugo. The area was used for ranching by Mexican and then American Ranchers until the early 1900s at which point railroads were run to it and it was rapidly developed.
The area has a high population of people identifying as Latino. The Ascot Hills Park and Reservoir take up a significant portion of the neighborhood, though the rest is primarily residential with businesses and restaurants clustered along Valley Boulevard. Just north of El Sereno, the Pet Pet Dog Wash, as well as Dapper Dog Grooming, can have your pup looking good.
What is the terrain like in El Sereno?
Walking along the neighborhood streets of El Sereno is beautiful with the sweeping views of the foothills in the background. Single-story homes are set back from the road behind wide grassy yards. Some areas are unfenced, while others have long blocks of fenced area, so walking is variable throughout this neighborhood. There is no divider between sidewalk and road, but most of the time, vehicle traffic is light and not fast. You may be able to look for opportunities to bike at your dog's side during your outing.
It isn't hard to find a change from the neighborhood streets in El Sereno since the Ascot Hills Park takes up a significant part of it. This lovely park has a great trail down the valley if you want to walk on the stable ground, but rockier terrain is available higher up. Unfortunately the covered reservoir will not give your dog a chance to experience water.
How many greenways are there in El Sereno?
El Sereno is fortunate enough to have a splendid large park right in the neighborhood. The Ascot Hills Park has miles of grassy foothills for you to explore, as well as some tree-covered areas around the reservoir to shield you from the sun on the hottest days.
Just north of El Sereno, Ernest E. Deb's Regional Park provides many miles of trails over and through the foothills around Peanut Lake. This lake is the perfect place to acclimate your dog to water in a calm and safe way and also makes for gorgeous views of the desert landscape.
The Hermann Dog Park is not too far north of El Sereno and is the perfect place to let your dog play off-leash with their friends. Lots of varied terrain as well as a large area for your dog to run around in makes this a great place for you and your pup to enjoy.
