This neighborhood contains residential areas, however, there is also plenty of commercial and industrial activity. Main roads have services and restaurants that locals can reach on foot, so you're never very far from something of interest. The landscape in this neighborhood is dominated by the presence of major freeways. This long, narrow, shoelace-shaped neighborhood is a north-south corridor running along the Harbor Freeway and extending to the east along the Century and Glenn Anderson freeways at the northern tip, and west along the San Diego Freeway at its southern end. Where freeways intersect, there are large ramps and interchanges. Industrial areas tend to be congregated around these thoroughfares and are not pedestrian friendly. Freeways cannot be crossed on foot, however, there are over and underpasses that allow vehicles and pedestrians to navigate. There are also powerline corridors running through the neighborhood, but greenways under high voltage power lines are associated with health hazards and are not recommended for foot travel. Residential sections of the neighborhood consist mostly of single-family homes and some low rise apartments. The terrain is flat and quiet, residential areas provide pleasant, comfortable areas to walk your dog without strenuous effort.

Several parks in the Harbor Gateway North area provide green spaces and greenways to residents. One of the larger green spaces is Hellen Keller Park, a 7-acre park with playground, recreation center, and pool. Also located in Harbor Gateway North, the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve is located in the southern end of the community. This 13.6-acre protected area preserves local wetland flora and fauna. While much of the wetlands is not accessible by pedestrians and dogs, there are interpretive trails along the border and this green zone can be viewed from adjacent properties and sidewalks. Residents can enjoy the greenways associate with these parks with their dogs on a leash. Further northeast in the community, Athens Park, located east of the Harbor Freeway in Athens Village, has sports and recreation facilities, and 20 acres of parkland with walking trails for Harbor Gateway North residents in the adjacent area to explore.
