Harbor Gateway South is located in southern Los Angeles, California. This neighborhood is bordered by large freeways, main roads, and a large commercial industrial area at its northern tip, making traveling on foot in some directions not feasible. Residents with canine companions that enjoy walking can stroll about the quiet residential areas, or access services, shops, and restaurants on main thoroughfares such as Carson Street. Pet owners looking for nearby pet supply stores may have to travel by vehicle to nearby communities. However, there are some veterinary services available in the community that are convenient for locals. If you are planning on walking your dog in Harbor Gateway South, you will probably experience pleasant walking weather in spring, summer, fall, and winter. There is no need to take an umbrella on walks with your dog, but sunscreen, water, and protection for your puppy's paws from the hot pavement may be advisable.
Harbor Gateway South is a long, narrow community, situated south of the San Diego Freeway along the Harbor Freeway and Transit Way and bordered by Sepulveda Boulevard in the south. The northern section of this neighborhood has a large commercial area with chain stores, services, private companies and industrial buildings. This area is not pedestrian friendly. Residential and commercial areas along busy main thoroughfares to the south are better for walking.
The land is flat and there are sidewalks, often with grassy strips between pedestrian ways and roadways. Many private properties feature lawns and trees although vegetation is not substantial in this hot, dry climate. A fenced runoff canal runs through the community and provides some natural space alongside it for walking, but no developed walkways. Busy main streets offer a change of scenery from residential areas, however, they also have more traffic and vehicles coming and going from parking lots, so keep your dog securely leashed in these areas.
The Normandale Recreation Centre and Mulligan Family Fun Centre are two recreational areas with grounds located in Harbor Gateway South. Recreation centers provide sports facilities, walkways, and lawns. In the northern part of the neighborhood, you will find the Janet Shour Playground at Harbor Gateway Pocket Park. This small park features playground equipment and rest areas for pedestrians traveling on foot. Residents of Harbor Gateway South that travel by vehicle to the west will reach Redondo Beach where there are several dog-friendly sites for canines. The Redondo Beach Dog Park located here has 3 acres of fenced, off-leash dog runs with separate sections for large and small dogs. There are also drinking fountains to replenish water supplies for you and your playful pooch on hot summer days. If you travel south to Long Beach, you can have some fun with your water-loving dog at Rosie's Beach, a 3-acre off-leash dog-friendly beach; the only one of its kind in Los Angeles.
