Wag! Walkers know Helms District
Helms District, also called the Helms Bakery District, is located in the Culver City area of West Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood is centered around a former historical bakery that has been converted to an upscale design and furnishing shopping district. The area is surrounded by restaurants, local entertainment venues, and retail shops that attract many visitors to the neighborhood. There's even a veterinary clinic situated here for local pet owners to access.

Pet owners and frequent travelers in the Helms District experience typical sunny, dry Southern California weather most of the year. Rain and cold temperatures are not a factor as temperatures are warm and precipitation is rare. Heat and dry conditions can present a hazard in extreme conditions. Dogs and their people need to stay hydrated, take shelter from direct sun exposure, and avoid overexerting themselves. Long walks with your dog are best conducted earlier or later in the day in the Helms District.
What is the terrain like in Helms District?
Many of the notable shops and services of the Helms District are located in a historic former bakery and there are many associated commercial activities nearby situated between Venice Boulevard on the north and Washington Boulevard on the south. Residential single-family homes are located on the east and southeast sides. These homes are moderate in size with well-landscaped properties. Some residential streets have very large mature trees that create a canopy over the road which is not a common sight in urban Los Angeles as trees tend to be more desert-friendly and limited in size.

The terrain is flat in the area and residents don't have to contend with steep hills when traversing the region. There is an elevated train track running along the west side of the neighborhood with a cycling and pedestrian path running parallel to the street below. Ballona Creek runs along the east side of the district in an artificial canal.
How many greenways are there in Helms District?
A greenway cycling and pedestrian path runs alongside National Boulevard extending northwest from Syd Kronenthal Park. Pets should remain on a leash in this greenway and dog owners should watch out for fast-moving cyclists. Syd Kronenthal Park is located on the southeast corner of the Helms District and provides recreational activities like ball diamonds and a basketball court with paved pathways where you can stroll with your pup.

A short drive to the south, pet owners can take their furry friends to visit the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook and the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. These larger natural areas have acres of green space to explore with elevated terrain that provides spectacular views of the Los Angeles area. These parks have plenty of rugged terrain and steep trails to explore, although easier trails are also available for pedestrians and pets that are looking for a little more beginner-friendly walking experience.
