Wag! Walkers know La Tuna Canyon Park

La Tuna Canyon Park is a huge public park located 16 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The park is roughly 1,100 acres and is part of the Verdugo Mountains. There are no residential or commercial spaces as it is a completely natural area with hiking and mountain biking trails. There is a picnicking and parking area near one of the trailheads, but there are no public restrooms in La Tuna Canyon Park, so you may need to do some preparation before heading out.

The greater Los Angeles area has a milder, dry climate. Most of the rainfall will happen in the winter season with the summer season remaining relatively dry. Average temperatures stay somewhere in the mid-range, so La Tuna Canyon Park is easily accessible year round! With such perfect hiking temperatures, there should be little concern for heat exhaustion, but you may want to take along some water in case of emergency!

What is the terrain like in La Tuna Canyon Park?

La Tuna Canyon Park is on the northern slope of the Verdugo Mountains, so the terrain is quite hilly, to say the least! If you and your pup are going for a hike, please make sure you are wearing proper footwear, as this terrain can be a bit more strenuous than most. The area may not be suitable for older dogs with joint issues or those who are hiking beginners. Additionally, this park is all natural terrain and the hiking and mountain biking trails are frequently used and well-marked, but they are still unpaved and subject to natural conditions. Ultimately, this area is best reserved for experienced hikers.

If you commit to a longer hike, the top of the Verdugo Mountains promises amazing views of downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and other local mountain ranges. It may take some work to get up to that height, but the climb may definitely be worth it.

How many greenways are there in La Tuna Canyon Park?

La Tuna Canyon Park is one large greenway in and of itself. If you are interested in taking a hike for your pup's daily exercise, the trailheads can be found between Malibu and Topanga on the outer of a bend of Tuna Canyon Road. Additionally, there is a parking and picnicking area, and small pond and waterfall near the trailheads as well. If you explore this area, you may want to keep your dog close to you to prevent him from running into wildlife.

If you stay in La Tuna Canyon Park, you can hike anywhere from 2 to 5 miles roundtrip, however, the trails connect with other nearby parks, giving you access to explore almost 15 miles of the Verdugo Mountains!

The park does allow dogs, but they must remain on a leash at all times. Additionally, mountain bikers and horseback riders are also welcome to use the trails, so always exercise caution if walking in this local park.
