Wag! Walkers know Sherman Oaks
Sherman Oaks, a greater Los Angeles area neighborhood, is located in the San Fernando Valley and at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. The commercial areas of this neighborhood include public and private schools, a public library, a recreation center, plenty of shopping opportunities, and local and chain restaurants. There are several large brand pet stores in the area as well as a local grooming business, Sydnee's Pet Grooming. Sherman Oaks also has plenty of residential neighborhoods, which are largely made of standalone, single-family homes. These residential areas are great for those who enjoy a quieter walk down less busy streets. Fun fact: notable Sherman Oaks residents include Jennifer Aniston, Demi Lovato, Paula Abdul, the Olsen twins, James Dean, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

The greater Los Angeles area has a rather mild climate. Average temperatures range from 59° - 76°F, so you will likely have plenty of perfect days for a walk or hike!
What is the terrain like in Sherman Oaks?
Since Sherman Oaks is located in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, the neighborhood is quite hilly. The southern part of the neighborhood is close to the mountain range, so it has considerably more hills and steeper inclines which can be challenging for those who are beginners or have issues with mobility. Additionally, because of this neighborhood's location, there seems to be a good mix of natural and artificial terrain. The northern part of the neighborhood is more artificial, while the southern part of Sherman Oaks has more greenways and natural terrain. You'll have options depending on which type of environment you prefer.

The boundaries of Sherman Oaks are not linear, but it is bordered by the following other neighborhoods: Van Nuys and Valley Glen to the north, Studio City and Valley Village to the east, Beverly Glen and Bel Air to the south, and Encino to the west.
How many greenways are there in Sherman Oaks?
Sherman Oaks has plenty of greenways if you and your pup are looking for a little retreat from the more urban LA environment. The larger greenways include Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Recreation Center and its respective greenway, Deervale-Stone Canyon Park, Fossil Ridge Park, Coldwater Canyon Open Space, Dixie Canyon Park, Longridge Park, and Mrca Open Space. Some of these greenways are actually home to some residential buildings while others, like Fossil Ridge Park and Dixie Canyon Park, have hiking trails. These hiking trails are dog-friendly, but your pup will need to be leashed at all times to avoid any run-ins with other pedestrians, joggers, or bikers.

Besides the greenways in Sherman Oaks, there are also plenty of greenways just outside of the neighborhood's boundaries. Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve is the largest nearby greenway and it is home to a lake and plenty of walking trails for you to utilize with your pup at your side.
