Whittier is a large neighborhood on the east side of Los Angeles. The neighborhood is part of the Gateway Cities and was incorporated in the 1890s. It is named after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Whittier College also has its home in this neighborhood.
A Spanish soldier named Manuel Nieto received the land that Whittier was built on in the 1780s as a reward for his military service. After the Mexican-American War, a German immigrant bought 160 acres of land and built the Jonathan Bailey house which is still famous today.
