Black Mountain Ranch is a neighborhood located on the far north side of San Diego, California. Local businesses are situated on main thoroughfares and in commercial shopping areas on the borders of the community, however, the walkability of these services is hampered by the disparate geographical locations separate from housing developments.

Pet owners can access the 4 Paws Animal Hospital and a large chain pet store on north east side commercial area for veterinary services or pet supplies. Numerous greenways and greenway trails also provide walking locations in the community.

San Diego’s warm, sunny weather makes walking possible most days of the year. Wet and cold weather is rare. Hot weather is more of a factor and, when the temperature rises, you and your dog may want to take shorter walks at cooler times of the day and ensure that you and your pet stay well hydrated.

Black Mountain Ranch is a large irregularly shaped neighborhood occupying 5,100 acres northwest of Black Mountain. Large tracts of natural space surround and run through the community, including the La Jolla Valley, rocky western projections of Black Mountain, mesas, canyons, and ravines with creeks. The terrain in these natural areas is rocky and steep with native plants like sage and chaparral. The manicured green space of the Santaluz golf club and the course is centrally situated.

There are high-end homes that border onto the golf course and two main subdivisions in the community with Santaluz on the south side and Del Sur on the northside. Dwellings in the area are single-family homes on well landscaped and maintained properties. Elevation changes in the residential area are less abrupt with gently curving roads that follow the landscape. Sidewalks are prevalent in the community and provide separate walkways for people and pups.

Extending into the neighborhood and to the southeast is the miles of trails and acres of wilderness that comprise the Black Mountain Open Space Park. The summit of the mountain provides spectacular views to share on hikes in this preserve with your furry friend.
