San Diego has warm weather that is usually not too hot for walking with your dog in the summer and is fairly temperate year round! You can enjoy walking your pup any time of year in the San Diego area.
Gaslamp Quarter is a highly developed historical and entertainment district with multi-story buildings occupying 16 blocks. There are 94 historic buildings, mostly from the Victorian Era, in the region. The area was originally developed in 1867 and many buildings feature interesting architecture. Commercial and retail space is located at street level with offices and apartments on upper floors and dedicated apartment buildings in the community.
The terrain is flat and there are sidewalks providing separate pedestrian walkways along streets. This neighborhood has plenty of commercial activity and is densely populated with lots of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, so your dog will need to be accustomed to noise and trained not to step off curbs unless directed.
The waterfront is just a short distance to the southwest and there is public transportation between the Gaslamp Quarter and the water. Be careful to traverse the tracks only at controlled pedestrian crossings!
The South Park is located near the water as well and has a tree-lined promenade with a hedge maze, artwork, a fountain, and beautiful gardens. Pocket Park located on 4th Avenue and Island Avenue is a small hidden greenway in the neighborhood that has shade trees and seating where you can take a break in this pretty park with your pooch. There is also a neighborhood park at “F” and Front Street with open space and paved paths. Keep your dog leashed in the parks and bring supplies to clean up after them!
