Mission Valley is a community of northern San Diego that is a 10-minute commute from the downtown core. There are plenty of shopping, entertainment, and commercial areas that can be reached on foot.

Dog owners can find pet stores and veterinarians easily accessible in the region. If you want to stop for a bite to eat while out strolling with your dog, there are many local eateries that allow dogs to join their people on their outdoor patios including King's Fish House, Lazy Dog Cafe, Rubio's Coastal Grill, Gordon Biersch, Corner Bakery Cafe, Boudin Bakery, and True Food Kitchen.

San Diego has a fairly dry climate and less than average rainfall with hot summers and cooler, wetter winters. Winter is still fairly mild and, considering the coastal location, precipitation is not a big factor for pet owners and their pups. San Diego boasts 344 days a year with the temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with only 25 days when it is hotter than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mission Valley is located in the San Diego River Valley which runs east to west on the north side of the city. The neighborhood is divided into east and west by the State Route 163. Public transportation lines serve the area and tracks in the neighborhood should only be crossed at designated pedestrian crossings.

The Mission Valley area is comprised of apartments, condominium complexes, and shopping areas. There are lots of connecting parking lots and access to some buildings is via the parking lots as opposed to the usual urban streets. When accessing residences and shopping, remember that hot pavement can be hard on your pup's paws. Doggie boots can protect your pet's sensitive feet from hot surfaces.

There is some treed and natural green area along the river and a golf course and park on the west side of the region. The terrain is flat in the valley and streets tend to have separate sidewalks for pedestrians.

Mission Valley canines can enjoy two local dog parks just outside the neighborhood. The Citiva Neighborhood and Dog Park is a short distance to the north and is fenced and double gated with separate areas for large and small dogs. Your pup can get dusty in this park and the rough surface can be hard on puppy paws especially when it is hot out. Luckily, there is a water fountain, seating, and agility obstacles in the park as well.

A short distance to the south is Nate's Point Dog Park. This off-leash dog park has 2.3 acres that are fenced and gated. There are picnic tables providing seating and a drinking fountain for thirsty pups.

On the west end of Mission Valley is Presidio Park which contains interesting historic sites and 40 acres of wooded greenway with walking trails. This park provides a view of the city, the river valley, and the ocean nearby.
