What is the terrain like in Swan Canyon?
Swan Canyon is bordered by Fairmount Avenue on the west side, Home Avenue on the southeast border, Euclid Avenue on the east, and Thorn Street on the north side. The district is situated on 0.2 square miles of hilly terrain with a population of just under 3,000, so the area is not densely populated. There is a natural, undeveloped canyon running through the area.
Swan Canyon is about 30 acres in size and runs in a roughly north-south direction. Another natural area is situated on the northeast corner. The terrain features some steep hills and roads curve to accommodate the changes in elevation. Dog walkers will experience some treks up and down hills which are steep in some locations.
The area is comprised of single-family dwellings on landscaped properties. Yards have traditional plantings, lawns, and trees as well as drought-tolerant landscaping. Sidewalks are located along some roads, but not all. When you need to walk with your dog on streets, face oncoming traffic and keep your dog securely leashed.
How many greenways are there in Swan Canyon?
Swan Canyon provides 30 acres of natural space running through the residential community. The California Coastal Conservancy is working to ensure that this greenway provides usable recreational space and wildlife habitat. Trails in the greenway are not maintained and can be difficult, especially during wet weather.
To the northwest of Swan Canyon is the Manzanita Canyon and Manzanita Canyon Trails. Dog walkers can take their canine companions for a longer hike through this natural green space and enjoy the wilderness area. Trails in the canyon are natural surfaced and subject to weather. Rocky terrain and elevation changes in the area can be difficult for some pedestrians and pets, so you'll want to plan your hike to your ability levels.
The Charles Lewis III Memorial Park is located on the southeast side of Swan Canyon and occupies 5.9 acres. Two acres of the area is developed recreational space with a skate park while the rest of the greenway is natural terrain along a hillside.
