Balboa Park is a residential community located in southern San Francisco and immediately next to City College of San Francisco's campus. It is named for the park of the same name, also located within in the neighborhood's bounds. Home to mostly standalone, single-family homes, Balboa Park is also home to two high schools, a middle school, a large greenway, access to public transportation, a grocery store, a gas station, and several chain stores and local restaurants.

Balboa Park and San Francisco have a mild climate and temperatures. Average temperatures range from 45-80°F. This means that your pup doesn't typically have to worry about hot concrete burning their sensitive paw pads on those steamy summer days. However, you should probably grab a light jacket before heading out for a walk as it can get quite chilly during the evenings, on cloudy days, or when a breeze comes in off the Pacific Ocean.

Balboa Park is composed of largely artificial terrain, however, with the size of Balboa Park, you can find some green spaces to escape to during your daily walks! While most of the neighborhood has very few grassy areas or even trees, the residential neighborhoods do have large, maintained sidewalks, so you and your pup will be safe from traffic while on your daily walks. This neighborhood is also mostly flat and there are some changes in incline, but nothing too steep, so you and your pup should enjoy a nice, leisurely walk.

The boundaries of Balboa Park include Havelock Street and San Juan Avenue to the north, Mission Street to the east, Geneva Avenue to the south, and John F. Foran Freeway to the south. Ocean Avenue and Alemany Boulevard are also two major roadways through Balboa Park. You and your pup may want to avoid those roadways just to escape the high-traffic or congested areas.

Unfortunately, there are only two greenways located in Balboa Park. The first, Balboa Park, is the largest greenway in the neighborhood. It has a large pool, a playground, a tennis court, sports fields, and a general recreation area. Unfortunately, there are no off-leash areas for your pup, but Balboa Park is still a great option for your pup to enjoy all the different smells! The second greenway is the Geneva Community Garden, a small space where residents can grow in small plots.

There are few other parks within walking distance of Balboa Park and they are mostly small parks with playgrounds. However, less than two miles to the east, you will find John McLaren Park, a large public park. John McLaren Park is home to a golf course, a playground, an amphitheater, and almost seven miles of walking trails which are perfect for when your furry friend needs a little extra exercise! There is even a small off-leash area located here.
