Wag! Walkers know Forest Hill
Forest Hill is everything that you think you believe a neighborhood should be. As one of eight master planned residence parks, it was originally conceptualized as the ideal family neighborhood and it is full of single-family homes with very little in the way of commercial businesses within its bounds. While it is not exactly what you would call an exclusive neighborhood, it is considered to be an affluent community with a fair amount of diversity. While your pup’s favorite amenities are not available in this neighborhood, there are a number of pet stores, vets, and groomers in the surrounding neighborhoods, so you will never have to go far for anything you need. Instead you get a quiet, forested neighborhood that is a delight to walk around.
The climate in San Francisco is delightfully mild with the worst concern being Pacific storms bringing rain and wind. Overall, you can expect average temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees year round.
What is the terrain like in Forest Hill?
Forest Hill is situated in a range of mountains which include the Twin Peaks, Mt. David, Larsen Peak, and Edgehill Mountain. Because of its location, it has more than its share of hills. You won’t find too many roads in this area that do not have at least some elevation change and some of the streets have some challenging climbs ahead for walkers.
If you are just starting out walking and have been sedentary, you may find you need to start out slow and work up to longer walks. Keep in mind that your pup may be in the same boat. Be sure to watch for signs of fatigue and soreness as it is up to you to recognize if your walks are too much for your pup. The streets through this area do have a lot of nice landscaping including trees and grassy shoulders, all of which makes for nice walking conditions for your dog.
How many greenways are there in Forest Hill?
Forest Hill has one park in its boundaries that makes for a nice change from walking on concrete sidewalks. Hawk Hill Park is a sandy dune that is breeding ground for a few different types of wildlife. As such, it has no designated trails and public access is discouraged. It is still open every day and is a place where locals like to walk due to its stunning views of the ocean.
Golden Gate Heights Park is just outside of Forest Hill and provides a place to walk. It is another dune which has spectacular views of the city and, like Hawks Hill, erosion is a serious problem here, so visitors are asked to stay on the designated trails.
Forest Hill is also within driving distance of several other greenways that provide good hiking alternatives such as Twin Peaks, Mt. Davidson, and Glen Canyon Park. All of these parks have steep elevation changes and may not be for the faint of heart.
