There are few people who have not heard of this famous neighborhood in San Francisco which is considered the birthplace of the hippie counterculture. Today, much of the memories of that culture remain from the Grateful Dead house to the Corner of Haight & Ashbury, but the vibe in this community has changed. While the population is quite diverse, the vibe is distinctly modern if not somewhat eclectic at times. As you might imagine, a walk around can be a real treat. Stroll down Haight St. and be treated to a plethora of shops and eateries where you can stop for a bite to eat.

What is the terrain like in Haight-Ashbury?
Haight Ashbury is a mix of residential and retail and has an urban feel to it. While every street has a sidewalk, you will find that any sort of greenery is pretty limited to a few trees and the odd planter box filled with flowers. The grass is pretty sparse, so expect to be walking on concrete for your entire walk unless you plan to escape to one of the local park areas.
A word of caution: while it rarely ever gets hot here, when it does, it is important to watch for sidewalks being too hot for your pup's feet. Touch the ground and if it is too hot for your hand to remain there for a few seconds, then it is too hot for your dog!
This area is pretty flat, so if you have your heart set on a stroll through town, you will be happy to know there are no intense hills to get in your way.

Buena Vista Park is in the neighborhood to the southeast and offers multiple trails to walk. With 36 acres and beautiful oak groves, this walk is a treat for both you and your dog. The Oak Groves here are some of the few remaining in San Francisco. As a bonus, if you are looking for a bit more of a challenging walk, the park is on a hill and also has some great views of the city.
To the north and west of the neighborhood is Golden Gate Park and the Panhandle which is a small park that serves as an offshoot of Golden Gate Park. Both have an abundance of trails, tree groves, picnic spots, access to the ocean, and a variety of other activities.
