Wag! Walkers know Ingleside
Part college community, part working-class families, this area is billed as one of the last affordable areas to live in San Francisco. Situated on the south side of San Francisco and just south of the City College of San Francisco, Ingleside once had a reputation for being a tough area, but today, residents and fans of this culturally diverse area would vigorously defend its rich diversity and even call it underappreciated. For dog walkers, a trip through the neighborhood of Ingleside can be a treat. Coffee houses and cafes add to its distinct vibe and offer places to enjoy a bite of food or a drink with your pup in tow thanks to curbside seating. The area is not rich in amenities for Fido, but that does not mean you won’t find a lot of dog lovers. San Francisco weather makes it possible to walk far more days than not and it never gets too hot or cold.
What is the terrain like in Ingleside?
Ingleside is a predominantly urban type of environment with small yards, concrete sidewalks, and little in the way of greenery in the public spaces you might walk in. Elevations are mixed as the west side of the neighborhood is mild in terms of hills with the biggest elevations changes mainly on the east side of the neighborhood. The hills through here are significant, but you can often walk perpendicular to the streets with hills if you are still new to walking and working your way up to the challenge of San Francisco's terrain. If your pup is elderly, you might want to consider keeping to the west side for walking as much as possible where elevation changes are somewhat gentler. Not everyone wants gentle walks though, and this area appeals to those wanting more of a challenge. Just to the south and east, for the truly adventurous, are some serious hiking opportunities.
How many greenways are there in Ingleside?
Ingleside is a fairly small neighborhood and does not have any actual greenways, but it is surrounded by parks and trails within a short distance from the neighborhood, so there are plenty of options if you and your furry companion are ready to get off of the artificial turf of your neighborhood.
Balboa Park to the northeast is perhaps the closest. Lots of grass and trees, as well as a large playground, make it an ideal destination if you are keen to give your dog some extended leash time. Lakeview and Ashton Mini Park are just off the southwest corner and, although it is small, they do offer some of the amenities you might be looking for. Grass and ocean views greet you and give you the best possible reasons to stop and enjoy the park for a while.
To the southeast is the San Bruno Mountain State and County Park. This park has multiple primitive trails, providing unlimited acreage.
